The United Kingdom’s Filipino-inspired film “Metro Manila” is nominated in five categories at the upcoming British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).

Directed by British filmmaker Sean Ellis, the crime-drama chasing one’s dreams amid the harsh realities of urban living, will vie for the Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Best Achievement In Production awards at the 16th edition of the annual awards night.

Two of the movie’s All-Filipino cast members – Jake Macapagal and John Arcilla – are also nominated in the Most Promising Newcomer and Best Supporting Actor categories, respectively.

Macapagal is the protagonist Oscar Ramirez, who tries his luck in the big city with his family from Banaue, while Arcilla plays a sly armored truck senior officer training the former.

Arcilla took to his Facebook account to acknowledge the nominations and “wish(ed) this news can put a smile or even just a brief sigh of relief to my devast(at)ed fellow Filipinos.”

“I glorify God for this Blessing and Thanking everyone who Believed. My Gratitude to all who care. My journey is yours too,” the veteran actor wrote on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

British actor Ewan McGregor announced, through a press release in BIFA’s official website on Monday, the nominations that were narrowed down from over 200 films and decided by ballot by a pre-selection committee of 70 members.

The winners of BIFA, which will be announced on Dec. 8, “are decided by an independent jury comprised of leading professionals and talent from the British film industry.”

“Metro Manila,” a gripping tale set in the country’s capital, was handpicked by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts as the UK’s submission to the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film category. It had its international premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in Utah, where it bagged the Audience Award for Best World Dramatic Film.
