Along with weight and complexion, balding is often made the butt of jokes — something that singer Abby Asistio knows well.
In an interview, she recalled the times people have laughed at her alopecia areata, a condition that causes patches of hair loss that she has had at four years old.
“Minsan may mga nag-ko-comment ‘Ay, kalbo!’ or ‘Naglalakad na buko’ or ‘Oh, my God!’ or ituturo (yung ulo ko). Minsan nagbubulungan sabay tatawa. Tahimik na lang ako pero nakakaapekto po yun, may heartache,” she said.
There have also been instances when people assume she was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. At one meeting, someone even “implored” divine help for her “recovery.”
Before going bald, Abby had lived life wearing a wig or hat. Although she regards these as a fashion statement or a stand on individuality, she knew that these merely served as “crutches” for her confidence.
“Dati, hindi ako buo pag wala akong wig. Pero ngayon, okay na ako.”
Indeed. A few months ago, Abby auditioned on “The Voice of the Philippines” in hairless glory. She and the coaches even talked about her condition on air. Although, the singer didn’t make it to the finals, she seemed happy enough to have shown herself confidently to the public in a bid to inspire others like her to do the same.
Abby asserts though that she is not “anti-wig;” that she respects people with alopecia if they opt to wear one.
“Kung saan mas kumportable, go! Parang as long as you are able to embrace and accept who you are, okay lang, with or without the hair.”
The Manila Genesis Entertainment & Management Inc talent has written the song “Beautiful” that is about her stand on loving self. On the video, Abby appears bald and cries midway through.
These days, the singer-songwriter is showing some hair growth, said to be a result of using Novuhair Topical Scalp Lotion which she endorses. Aside from this physical change, Abby is thrilled to be a finalist of a beauty campaign and to have been named one of young achievers in the country by a popular magazine.
