Thirty-five-year old actress Rufa Mae Quinto advocates safe sex.
At the launch of TV5′s HIV-themed drama series entitled “Positive,” Rufa who plays a cheating wife and cougar, stressed that safe-sex is “dapat!”
Her unsolicited endorsement for safe-sex came at an opportune time along with the show “Positive” since the number of people infected with the Human Immune Virus or HIV was reported to have increased in the Philippines. “Positive” tackles the life of Carlo played by Martin Escudero, a call center manager who got infected with HIV.
According to Rufa, “Positive” has a lot of firsts for her: it is the first time she’s in a serious, sensitive and socially relevant teleserye, and it is also the first time she has a love scene in a jacuzzi for television.
“I have to give it all na. Todo na ito. Wala ng inhibitions,” she said. “Nagkaroon ako ng kissing scenes noong araw pero boyfriend ko before then after that hindi na ako nag-kissing scene. If ever si Daboy at Bong Revilla lang pero nakatayo lang. Saka very light lang compared dito.”
She shared that her role isn’t just slutty for sleeping with a younger man. She is a lonely married woman whose husband seldom makes love to her. Plus she discovered that he is having an affair. She met Martin through social media network.
“Natuhod ko pa nga ang ano niya kasi galaw kami ng galaw sa jacuzzi. Naka-boxers kasi lang siya,” intimated Rufa, smiling.
She had to ask her director Eric Quizon on how to do a love scene for television as it was her first time. The result, she was acting not only with her lips but as well as her hands going through Martin’s head as well as giving him tender kisses on his shoulders!
“Martin was nice kasi sabi niya siya na ang bahala sa akin,” quipped Rufa.
With regards to being called a “cougar” in real life, Rufa pointed-out that she has never had a younger boyfriend. She revealed though that she has had lots of younger men as suitors.
“Actually hindi ko pa alam kasi hindi pa ako nagkaroon ng boyfriend na younger sa akin. Hindi pa ako umaabot sa pagiging cougar. Hindi lang naman mga bata pero all levels. Pero akala kasi nila bata pa ako,” said Rufa.
But she would never lie about her age, not even to suitors.
“Bakit ako magsisinungaling eh makikilala naman nila ako through Internet and all. Ayaw kong magsinungaling kasi I’m proud of what I’ve become, my age and all. Na realize ko rin na dapat I should be comfortable kahit wala akong make-up, tsaka wag akong ma conscious and to give my 100 percent in my work,” she said.
Beyond showbiz, Rufa Mae wants to give back to people. Her success as a comedienne paved the way to her to becoming a host, a concert performer and even a film producer.
“Dati love ko career ko because I want to earn. Eh ngayong kumita na, I want to give back why I’m still here, why I’m still Rufa Mae. Basta gusto kong magkaroon ng ibibigay sa mga tao, kung ano man yun, I should do something good.”
