The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), which undertakes the annual Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) has set Oct. 4, 2013 as the deadline for submission of entries to the CinePhone, Student Short Film, Animation and Full Feature categories of this year’s December film festival.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino, who is concurrently head of the MMFF, said the New Wave Film Festival encourages young and talented filmmakers to exhibit their craft. The CinePhone Festival, now on its second year, is a prelude to the yearly mainstream MMFF, and is a cellphone movie-making contest open to all currently enrolled high school and college students.
Participants should submit a duly accomplished entry form together with the synopsis of the story and proof of enrollment. Aside from film scholarships and internships, CinePhone winners will receive P25,000 each.
The Student Short Film category, on the other hand, is open to all tertiary students. The short film entry must not exceed 20 minutes and has not been entered in other film competitions. Entries should be submitted in five playable DVDs in AVI format. The Student Short Film winners will receive P50,000 for the Best Picture and P25,000 for the special Jury Prize, along with scholarships and internships for the students.
Chairman Tolentino said: “The concept of change must come from the youth. Let us give them opportunity to espouse ingenious ideas and contribute to the development of the film industry.”
For the first time in the history of the MMFF, it has also opened its doors to animators with the inclusion of the Animation category to this year’s film festival. The contest is open to all Filipino professional and/or student/amateur animators. Entries must have a maximum running time of 12 minutes and have not, in any way been commercially shown here and abroad. The winners will receive P100,000 for Best Picture and P50,000 for the Special Jury Prize.
As to the entries to the Full Length category, they should not have been featured in other local and international festivals, and must have a total running time of 75 minutes. Prizes are: P300,000 for Best Picture; P200,000 for Special Jury Prize; and P50,000 for Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Director.

Andi Is Half-Snake Vixen On ‘Galema’
With Andi Eiganmann playing a half-snake vixen on “Galema: Anak ni Zuma,” Box Office Director Wenn V. Deramas promises to keep afternoon Kapamilya viewers awake when the new series starts airing this September.
“Galema” is a special offering of ABS-CBN – the home of hit Pinoy classics – to afternoon TV viewers as part of the grand celebration of 60 years of Philippine television and the continuing tradition of sharing well-loved komiks tales that widened the imagination and reflected the true Filipino culture.
Based on the longest-running Pinoy komiks series written by Jim Fernandez, “Galema” is an extraordinary tale about family and love. It will revolve around the life of a good-hearted young lady named Galema (Andi) who was born with twin snakes attached to her neck, a curse that she inherited from her beastly father Zuma.
Joining Andi on “Galema,” to premiere soon on ABS-CBN’s Kapamilya Gold, are Matteo Guidicelli, Meg Imperial, Sunshine Cruz, Sheryl Cruz, Carlos Morales, Divina Valencia, Lito Legaspi and introducing Derick Hubalde as Zuma.

NYOBG Performs In A ‘Not So Ordinary Variety Show’
NYOBG (Not Your Ordinary Boys and Girls) is Backroom’s newest talents. The group is composed of Ian Batherson, Benj Bolivar, Carlo Sawit, Nikita McElroy, PJ Go, Avery Paraiso, Maui Lumba, Bon Jovi Osorio, they will strut their stuff in an upbeat performance billed “Not Your Ordinary Variety Show” at Pagcor Casino theaters this September.
The extraordinary performance will showcase the NYOBG bunch in the fashion runway wearing Jag outfits. A dance number of the latest craze is another number worth looking forward to. The audience is encouraged to participate in a number of games with some exciting prizes.
Presented by Casino Filipino and Jag, the “Not Your Ordinary Variety Show” opened last Sept. 13 at Casino Filipino Pavilion, to be followed on Sept. 19 at CF Hyatt; Sept. 21 Airport CF, and Sept. 28 CF Angeles.
Special guests are Mariel de Leon, the not so ordinary daughter of Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong, Ms. Casino Filipino 2012 winner Loraine de Guzman and runners-up Reynalyn Yamanouchi, Kimberly Pajares and Carin Adrianne Ramos.
“We are lucky,” says Ian, who is a survivor of the celebrity showdown “Survivor Philippines.” Ian said he hopes to do his best to deliver and meet the expectations of his audience.
Bon Jovi says he is more than ready to face the challenges that will come his way. “I have psyched myself up for anything in showbiz. Ready na ako,” says Bon Jovi whose name was taken after the famous rock star Jon Bon Jovi.
Avery, the curly-haired young model who makes heads turn because of his mane, says that he is considering on changing hairstyles to prove that he’s got the moves.
Benj, who has had his share of television commercials is looking forward to be in the business. “Showbiz is a challenge. I hope to break into it,” says Benj.
Carlo whose most recent commercial was for Kremil-S, where he appeared with Boy Abunda says, “To be able to entertain people is like traveling. I love it. It’s an adventure.”
Nikita, who is part French, part Black American and Filipino enthuses, “Hangga’t kaya ko, kung puwede lahat gagawin ko,” she says.
PJ Go, who has modeled for Bench and Rusty Lopez, among other brands, feels like he was born to be in the business. “If you work hard, makukuha mo ang mga pangarap. Magtatagumpay ka gaano man kahirap ang buhay.”
Maui Lumba whose father used to be a model and a contemporary of Christopher de Leon and Edu Manzano, is excited about what is going to happen. “May konting nerbiyos but it’s more of excitement. Rampa uli kami,” he says.
