It’s turning out to be the year of gay movies in local show business what with Cinema One Originals Festival closing film “Slumber Party” hitting theaters nationwide on Nov. 27.
Starring Archie Alemania, Markki Stroem and RK Bagatsing with the special participation of returning actor Niño Muhlach, the film is about gay friends whose friendship is put to the test when they hostage and vie for the attention of a frat neophyte who broke into their house, disrupting their planned sleep over hours before a most awaited beauty pageant.
During the screening held at Glorietta 4 last Nov. 19, the audience delighted seeing the three otherwise hunky actors in drag, soooo limpwristed and flamboyant, and conversing in gay lingo. The scene stealer, however, is Nino who plays gay for the first time in his career. “Slumber Party” director Emman de la Cruz said that he had long wanted to work with him ever since he started watching the child wonder’s it movies in the ‘70s co-starring such icons as Fernando Poe, Jr and Dolphy.
“Niño came prepared for this movie, walang arte. Pagdating niya sa set, nakadamit na siya — naka-manicure na nga — at may dalang sarili niyang damit at make-up,” Emman said to that effect in lauding the actor.
Markki’s participation in “Slumber Party” comes on the heels of a movie from another festival. His next one is yet another film festival entry due next month.
“I enjoy doing festival movies because I get roles that are unusual and challenging. I’ve always wanted to be seen as a versatile actor that’s why I welcome the variety,” he told Bulletin Entertainment in an exclusive interview.
RK Bagatsing was unable to attend the premiere as he is currently doing a series in Singapore.
At first glance, “Slumber Party” may be deemed as stereotypical depiction of gays with different personalities. But as the story progresses with the characters revealing their secrets and innermost thoughts to one another, people eventually find themselves laughing with the characters instead of laughing at them.
“(We) enter their world with lesser judgment and preconceptions,” Emman was quoted to have said of his film in a release.
Archie admitted respecting gays even more after doing the film, seeing how they struggle to overcome discrimination on daily basis, sometimes even by loved ones.
“They are strong people,” he said.
“Slumber Party” premiered at the Cinema One Originals Film Fest 2012. It is produced by Emman dela Cruz, HUBO Productions, Cinema One, Christian Diamzon Pictures and Origin8 Media.
