Enjoying renewed popularity is late ’90s song “Whoops Kiri,” no thanks to Vice Ganda.
The phenom is nothing new since a long line of TV hosts achieved the same feat and on a wider magnitude in the past.
Take for example “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley. This pop tune originally released in 1987 became a huge hit locally courtesy of TV host Roderick Paulate who made it part of his repertoire, so much so, that today Pinoy considers the song as ubiquitous to the Brit singer as it is with Paulate.
Another big tune popularized around on these shores by a local celebrity is “Body Dancer” by Italian group Magic Fire. This tune as with its signature dance move became a huge part of Philippine TV thanks to actress-TV host Maricel Soriano. In fact, many Pinoys don’t even remember Magic Fire when talking about the song, just the Diamond Star.
Then there’s Soriano’s ex-husband Edu Manzano, who helped revive interest in Polish jazz vocalist Urszula Dudziak’s “Papaya” by using the song on “Pilipinas, Game KNB?” It became so big that ABC’S “Good Morning America” even predicted it would be the “Next ‘Macarena,’” which did not happen.
Other TV hosts have turned even original songs into hits.
Joey de Leon, for one, wrote a number of songs that became hits through constant exposure on noontime show “Eat Bulaga.” The titles “Itaktak Mo” and “Kagat Labi” come to mind.
Though he is not really a TV host, Lito Camo wrote a number of tunes that TV host Willie Revillame amde famous (e.g. “Giling-Giling,” “Boom Tarat Tarat”).
Whoops…here comes nothing new
