The setting sun means just the start of the day for club disc jockeys, who mostly thrive in the nightlife.
Although apparently, a party DJ’s work doesn’t end at the break of dawn, at least for budding French producer Thomas Ouf, better known behind the decks as DJ Kulkid.
“I almost, always work, (dish out) my music during the night, but, yeah, during the day I always answer to emails, preparing tracklists for my gigs…” Kulkid related to Bulletin Entertainment in an exclusive interview. The international DJ is visited Manila for a “mini-Kulkid Philippines Tour,” and the launch of the dating app called Paktor.
“The nighttime is when I go to a gig… the time where I just work, DJ-ing, but daytime is (for) producing and composing music…It’s just basically producing music and remixes for bands.”
Beats down memory lane
When asked what house music is for him, the international DJ associated it with nostalgia.
“We listen to house music since like the ’90s, maybe a bit more before, with huge names like Coldcut, and maybe Daft Punk – they’re all here. It’s not really house music for me but, yeah, I like to make music, and house music is like the oldest one for me, so it brings back a lot of memories, from when I was a child in the ’90s,” Kulkid explained.
He added, “House, is mostly to me, the most danceable music.”
While Kulkid is considerably new to the house music scene – having just started late last year – “Kulkid” is actually his second project, after producing “dubstep and bass music under another name” two years ago.
Pinoy barhopping
It his first time here in the country, he said he planned “to maybe go shopping a bit, and go to the beach – enjoy the place,” he said.
“We’ve been to a pub called Republiq, and it’s quite good, but my favorite place is Distillery. We had some great shots, yesterday night. It was really a nice place,” he related.
Apparently this trip has exceeded his expectations of the Philippines.
“I thought it would be a bit smaller than this, but it’s a treat, cause it’s big, it’s full of buildings, and rooftops like here. I pretty much like the place – it’s cool. The crowd seems to be a bit more casual and chilly than in Europe.” As he was only performing on the night of the interview, he noted with a laugh, “I will see tonight how it’s going to happen, if people are going to dance – I hope so.”
Kulkid also shared his thoughts on the new dating app, Paktor, and how it suits the nightlife.
“It’s an application that people mostly going to use by night, like in clubs. Like, if I were single, I would just ‘like’ every girls I like in real life… those kinds of things. Like, catching up on some girls, 90% of the time, happens by night. I think this is the way my work here corresponds to the Paktor application.”
