Although he admits that “wala talaga akong alam about indie,” John Prats ventures into his first film of this kind via Mes de Guzman’s “Sitio” for the Cinema One Originals Festival of 2013.
Despite his almost two decades in showbiz, the actor finds the experience of making indie films quite different from that of mainstream movies.
“Wala kasing pini-please na market (ang indie film) … (dapat) totoo lang kung paano ka magsalita, ganun ka lang magsalita, kung gusto mo magmura, magmura ka,” he told Bulletin Entertainment during the 5th anniversary taping of “Banana Split.”
According to the actor, “Sitio” is a suspense-thriller film that will be screened in November. It highlights the story of a family who returns to the province in search of a simpler life but instead ends up experiencing conflicts.
John related he worked harder than ever in the film because “iba ’yung trabaho syempre (as compared to mainstream), mas maliit ’yung grupo tsaka puro theater artists ang kasama ko, pero at the same time mas seryoso kasi mas artistic (ang production).”
Also, “Ang sarap lang gumawa ng pelikulang free kang gawin (ang gusto mo),” he quipped.
The 29-year-old actor sees it a challenge to be directed by Mes, a CineFilipino Best Director.
“Kasi ’yung director ko… naguusap kami (dapat) magtrabaho ka bilang artista, paano mo mapo-portray (ang character), ayaw nya ’yung mga teleserye acting na ang laki ng galaw,” he shared.
In search of fulfillment as an actor, he noted, “I wanted to do something different this time kaya tinganggap ko ‘’yung proyekto.”
His perfect match
Despite John’s busy work schedule, he describes his relationship with his actress girlfriend Isabel Oli as the best he’s ever had.
“Iniintindi niya ’yung trabaho ko, suportado ako at bihira kami nagaaway, mas relaxed ako, mas nagagawa ko ’yung gusto kong gawin,” he shared.
During minor misunderstandings, he said, “Laging positive ’yung iniisip namin, ayaw namin magisip ng mga negative na ‘baka maghiwalay.’ Hindi siya option this time.”
Comparing it with his past experiences, he narrated, “May mga moments ako na sinasabi ko (noon) sa ex ko na, ‘’Wag mo akong iwan ah,’ laging ganun, but this time we never talked about it, hindi ako napa-praning. Kung lalabas siya with her friends okay lang, ang luwag nung relasyon, ang mature.”
Still, the past has served its lessons.“Hindi ko naman nire-regret ‘yung sinasabi ng mga tao na andami kong naka-relasyon… hindi din ako magiging loving kung hindi ko napagdaanan ’yung mga dating relasyon,” he quipped.
Asked if Isabel is “the one,” he quickly replied, “Oo naman, wala na akong hihilingin pa.”
