Los Angeles – Every year, we look forward to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) that has become a major player in the festival circuit.

More and more films are being shown at the TIFF and we are proud to say that five Filipino films also made it to the list – Brillante “Dante” Mendoza’s “Sapi” (as part of the Vanguard Section, starring Dennis Trillo, Baron Geisler and Meryl Soriano), Lav Diaz’s “Norte (Hangganan ng Kasaysayan),” (starring Sid Lucero, Angeli Bayani and Archie Alemania), Jeffrey Jeturian’s “Ekstra” (as part of the Contemporary World Cinema category, starring Batangas Governor Vilma Santos), Raya Martin and Mark Peranson’s “La ultima pelicula” and Lino Brocka’s restored version of “Maynila Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag” (presented at Cinematheque, starring Hilda Koronel and Bembol Roco).

Aside from watching movies, eating lanzones from Thailand and interviewing the stars, we love going to Toronto which has been the mecca for the movie buff and aficionado.

We did not realize Benedict Cumberbatch, who was promoting three movies at TIFF (“The Fifth Estate,” “12 Years as a Slave” and “August: Osage County”), had many “Cumberbitches” (how his fans called themselves). Also known as the “Triple IT Boy” at the TIFF, Benedict, however, remains humble and unaffected as he takes in all the adulation in stride and remains levelheaded.

Matthew McConaughey, who lost 50 pounds for his role in “Dallas Buyers Club”, talked to us about his fish diet while his co-star Jared Leto, who also lost some weight for his role, gamely entertained all the ladies (and the men) who missed him after he turned down films to perform with his band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, for the past six years. Jared also talked about his trip to the Philippines, which we will tell you more about, in our next column.

Glamour and fashion abound on the red carpet and in the after-parties. At the InStyle and Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) party that was held at the Windsor Arms Hotel and hosted by Salvatore Ferragamo, the ladies arrived in their couture creations.

Jessica Chastain, who was promoting “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby,” arrived in a lovely azure Dolce & Gabbana dress with black lace highlights and black Ferragamo shoes. Jessica, who is always friendly and charming, greeted her fans who were waiting for her at the hotel entrance that she even willingly posed with them before entering the hotel.

Jennifer Morrison of “Once Upon A Time” immediately attracted attention with her bright electric blue Monique Lhuillier strapless dress. “I just love Monique,” the actress told us. “Her clothes are very feminine and sexy.” Red Carpet Fashion Awards already chose Jennifer’s Monique Lhuillier dress as their favorite at TIFF with its embellished frothiness complemented by a black sash and matched with a pair of leopard Louboutin shoes and accessorized with Graziela Gems earrings.

We also loved Juliette Lewis’ Sabrina-cut nude-colored Wes Gordon dress that emphasized Juliette’s curves. Juliette was excited to work with Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in “August: Osage County,” she said.

Her co-star, former child actress Abigail Breslin, was all grown-up in a cleavage-showing Alice+Olivia by Stacey Bendet flowery gown. Now with long blonde hair, the former “Little Miss Sunshine” is now 17 years old and partying…but still accompanied by her mom and manager.

Daniel Bruhl, who is in “Rush” and “The Fifth Estate,” enjoyed our comments that the real former Formula One racing driver Niki Lauda, whom he portrayed in “Rush,” actually imitated him and the way he spoke.

Daniel also chatted with Eli Roth (“The Green Inferno”) whom we teased about not going to the Philippines during the rainy season when Quentin Tarantino went in 2007 for the 9th Cinemanila International Film Festival. With Eli were his co-stars in “The Green Inferno,” Ariel Levy and Chilean actress Lorenza Izzo who was wearing a colorful and tight, cleavage-busting House of Holland resort 2014 zip up dress.

Mark Wahlberg, who arrived in a casual T-shirt, was late but managed to talk about his Wahlburgers, the Toronto outpost of the burger joint he co-owns with brothers Donnie and chef Paul.

Hugh Dancy, who was filming “Hannibal” in Toronto, also dropped by. Demian Bichir (“Dom Hemingway”) had his arms around Canadian model actress Stefanie Sherk.

Director Steve McQueen and “12 Years a Slave” star Lupita Nyong’o talked to us about how difficult it was to make the movie. Lupita was glamorous in a Veroncia Beard coat.

Our guests at the party – Samantha East, Michael Acedillo, Baby and Diwata Viado – enjoyed themselves so much that they look forward to another exciting TIFF and InStyle/HFPA party next year.
