Indie film “Transit” has been chosen as the Philippine entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the American Academy Awards for next year.
This was announced by the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) on Wednesday.
“Transit” bested contenders “Thy Womb,” “On The Job,” “Supremo,” “El Presidente,” “Ekstra,” “Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles,” “Tuhog” and “Boses.”
Ironically, the family drama, which swept a number of awards at the 2013 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, was not among films originally shortlisted by the FAP for Oscar consideration.
FAP special committee chairman Peque Gallaga explained that this was due to “Transit” not being able to secure the mandatory one-week commercial run.
“Before the deliberations, however, ‘Transit’ started on its theatrical run so the FAP included it into the official shortlist,” Gallaga told Interaksyon.
Earlier, “Transit” executive producer Paul Soriano announced that the film will be screened at the Busan International Film Festival in October where it will compete with 12 other Asian films under the festival’s New Currents section.
“Transit” won a total of 11 awards in this year’s Cinemalaya film festival (New Breed category), including Best Film, Best Director (Hannah Espia), Best Actress (Irma Adlawan), Best Supporting Actress (Jasmine Curtis-Smith), Best Original Score, Best Editing and Best Cinematography.

Meanwhile, local Pop Princess Sarah Geronimo was named among nominees at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) as culled from the official list unveiled on MTV EMA’s official website Tuesday.
The 24-year-old is nominated in the Best Southeast Asia Act category, along with Malaysia’s Hafiz, Vietnam’s My Tam, Indonesia’s NOAH, Singapore’s Olivia Ong and Thailand’s Slot Machine.
Not that this is the first international recognition for the singer-actress.
Other local and international recognitions Geronimo has earned through the years include plums as Best Asian Artist (Philippines) at the 2012 MNet Asian Music Awards and a Nickelodeon Philippines’ Kids’ Choice Award.
MTV EMA described Geronimo’s recently released album “Expressions,” as a “breakthrough.”
On the other hand, making waves again after a brief hiatus following her controversial falling out with ex-boyfriend DJ Mo Twister is actress-singer Rhian Ramos.

Ramos is starring in the latest music video of Grammy-winning band Jars of Clay for their song “Fall Asleep” taken from their eleventh studio release “Inland.”
The 22-year-old said she feels “very lucky” for the opportunity.
The video, which was directed by fellow Pinoy Luis Daniel Tabuena, was published on YouTube over the weekend earning raves from fans including several local celebrities.
“So proud of Rhian for being in the music video of the band Jars of Clay,” tweeted actress Iza Calzado.
“Just saw the latest Jars of clay Music vid with ze gorgeous @whianwamos as the leading lady! So Cooooooool!!” commented Anne Curtis.
“Wow. Our very own Rhian in a Jars of Clay music video! Congrats! added Maxene Magalona.
Jars Of Clay on their part thanked Ramos and Tabuena via Twitter as well for a job well done.
“Many thanks to @whianwamos for being so wonderfully perfect in our Fall Asleep video! And to @LDTabuena for envisioning and directing it!” the band posted.
