The old gang is back together in the new season of ‘The Voice’

The show has just been voted the best Reality-Competition Program at the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards and it has been beating the other singing competition in ratings. “The Voice” is coming on strong, it seems, even here in the country where its local adaptation, “The Voice Of The Philippines,” is a viewership-magnet and social media juggernaut.

The original US version is coming back to local cable with its fifth season, featuring more than just the “bromance” between mainstay mentor/judges Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. While Season 4 mentor/judges Shakira and Usher have checked out of the show, the new season sees pioneers Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green reclaiming their red swivel chairs.

With all four mentors agreeing that part of the show’s appeal is their chemistry and that, ultimately, it’s not about the judges winning, they really can’t help but be super competitive just the same. Here’s what to expect:

A Catty Christina?

Xtina’s deliciously diva ways have been missed in the past season and perhaps the self-described “revived and renewed” pop star is gearing up for battle considering she has yet to lead a finalist to victory. “I have to take breaks, stay connected with myself. I’m a mom. When I leave here I put on sweats and a T-shirt, I check out. I needed some time to do that,” she says about skipping a season. Now that she’s back, with a stunning slimmer figure to boot, the claws may be out this time.

Gearing for a Green-ing

Cee Lo keeps Christina company in the no-win department, but the usually reserved mentor might just turn greener and hulk it up this season to win some. Returning from performing the “CeeLo Green is Loberace” live show at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, he joyfully says, “I missed everyone. I’m happy to be here.” Surely he’ll be a lot happier with a champ from his team.

Adamant Adam

Blake said he actually “got close” to Usher last season, but his love-hate relationship with Adam remains. Already, promotional footage aired in the US actually sees Adam telling Blake, “You’re gorgeous, man,” and Blake returning with a peck to his cheek! Still, while Adam is happy for the past winners, he is probably gearing to put his “bro” in his place and score another victory.

‘Bad Boy’ Blake

He leads the tally with three victories out of four seasons so it may be hard to turn the tide and keep the show from being nicknamed as “The Blake Shelton Show” any longer. One thing is for sure, though, he may not want to let up and give his peers any advantage. For this, he needs to be the “bad boy” to keep being the mentor to beat.

For everyone else

Aside from mentoring from top recording and performing artists and invaluable experience performing live and to millions of TV audiences, the winning protégé takes home US$100,000 and a recording contract as “The Voice” – a win-win proposition for any of them. For audiences: The awesome display of talent plus exciting mentor rivalry equals a good show – and the promise that, come Season 6, there might be six mentors in all.
