Max Collins in full bloom in Sineng Pambansa entry ‘Bamboo Flowers’

Max Collins apologizes for being emotional whenever she talks about her latest film “Bamboo Flowers”.

The 20-year-old Filipino-American actress talks animatedly about Maryo J. de los Reyes’ entry in the coming Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival All-Masters Edition.

“It’s a very inspirational movie, it’s about love, relationships, real life. It’s a true-to-life story so kakaiba talaga. Hindi siya basta kuwento, kwento siya na may meaning. Many Filipinos will find it inspiring as it is about their culture. And I believe panlaban din siya abroad,” she told InterAksyon during the recent press launch of the film festival presented by the Film Development Council of the Philippines and SM Cinemas.

An anthology about the lives of different people in Bohol who have to deal with the ever-changing world around them, “Bamboo Flowers” is about “the erosion of traditions and beliefs forces change in their lives and pushes them towards drastic life decisions”.Its title is based upon the actual chandelier-shaped bamboo flowers that blossom before they wither and die.

This is the third time that the Star Magic alumna turned Kapuso actress has worked with the veteran filmmaker best known for youth-oriented classics like “Bagets” and “Magnifico”.

“I worked with Direk Maryo on TV for ‘Pahiram ng Sandali’ and an episode of ‘Magpakailanman’, and he is always a joy to work with. He puts so much passion into everything he does. He’s so detailed. He wants every scene to be perfect and it shows in the final product. That’s why his actors and cast are always inspired to work with him. I’m just so honored to be a part of this film.”

In “Bamboo Flowers”, Max plays Dolores, a student and on-the-job trainee in a resort in Panglao who falls in love with Luis, played by Orlando Sol.

“She then finds herself torn between following her heart and following her dream of a better life after meeting a foreigner who offers marriage and a chance to fulfill that dream,” she revealed.

Max said that although “Bamboo Flowers” is her only film project not counting an indie film called “Mother” that was never released, she’s still happy that 2013 is a great year for her career that seems to be blooming at the right time.

She recently landed in the prestigious list of Yes! Magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful Stars and working with Direk Maryo on this film has only inspired her to do more.

“I hope to do more movies, more indies. I love doing interesting projects like this and playing characters that are different,” she exclaimed. She said she’s not even closing her doors on sexy films.

“If it’s with Direk Maryo, I probably won’t hesitate doing it because he’s supportive and caring when it comes to his actors. If it’s with other people, I would have to think about it but it also depends on the role offered. It’s also important to me that it’s a good story,” she qualified.

Posing sexy for men’s magazines is a another matter altogether.

“Oh, that will probably happen in the very far future, I don’t really have plans of doing it anytime soon.”

Also starring Mylene Dizon, Max Collins, Ruru Madrid, Irma Adlawan, Barbara Miguel and Spanky Manikan, “Bamboo Flowers” opens at SM Cinemas nationwide on September 11.
