Metal music band Badburn remains true to form

Rock’s not dead nor did it go on vacation. Like any genre, it just keeps undergoing reinvention; as fickle as the finger of fate.

Local heavy metal band Badburn is one of them. The brainchild of vocalist Marben Romero, the heavy-metal rap band was formed in 1994 but only started to enjoy fame in the early to mid-2000′s. The band released the major label album “Bound By Blood” in 2001 and two independent releases “Darkness Rising,” and “Crack The Weakened Surface,” in 2005 and 2010, respectively. The band’s current lineup includes Romero, guitarists David Diaz-Abaya, Gil Christ Tan, Bike Buick Vinas, bassist Hendrick Gonzales and drummer Joey Valverde.

At the launch of the music video for their latest single “The Pain Strikes,” Bulletin Entertainment asked them how they keep going.

Valverde, also a record company exec, shares that the band has been relying a lot on social media. “We’ve been promoting online on FB, YouTube, and Soundcloud. Especially now that we have a new video,” he said.

Helmed by Abaya, the guitarist-director said that the window of opportunity for the “The Pain Strikes” music video presented itself when he was asked by his former student (cinematographer for their first video “Kill At Will”) to direct and co-produce a narrative for her Film school demo reel.

“We agreed on two versions of the project with intentionally different outcomes. It was an experiment I laid out based on varying musical scores and edit styles, the core of which is what you see in the actual music video.”

The video took two days (to shoot) for the narrative portion of the video, and another day for the band/crowd sequences.

Being a D.I.Y. band with an indie album, and with piracy still a problem as with the continuous decline of physical album sales, how are they holding up?

Romero said: “It isn’t more of surviving than it is living it. This band continues to thrive not because of CD sales but because of the code it has lived by, moreso gravitated towards in the years it has been together and that is – ‘before being a band, Badburn is a family.”

“Indeed, a scene does not define Badburn because it can throwdown with any form of music/different kinds of people and hold its own. What defines the band is respect, loyalty and honor.”
