Ogie Alcasid is excited over “The Mega and the Songwriter,” his first musical variety show on TV5 together with Sharon Cuneta that is strictly about great singers, interesting conversations, and superb singing.

“We don’t have those big production numbers—we don’t even have an audience!” Ogie tells Bulletin Entertainment in a recent interview. “Bihira na ang variety show na ang focus ay pure music. No dancing dito at walang ulan ng confetti!”

The Ogie-Sharon chemistry is grounded on years of friendship. Recall that Sharon even put out a tribute album to Ogie whom she considers “one of the new masters” in the mold of Willy Cruz, Rey Valera and George Canseco.

“At ako naman ay fan ni Sharon,” Ogie said. “Yung boses niya unique, yung timbre niya ang ganda. And I think kung i-total mo ang hit songs ni Sharon, I think she’s one of Pinoy artists who has the most number of hits.”

“The Mega and The Songwriter” will not only feature stars but even newbie performers featured on YouTube. As OPM president, Ogie believes in passing the torch to the young ones in order to keep the scene vibrant and relevant.

According to a release, Sharon and Ogie will be interactive with their audience. Sharon will sing one of their songs and Ogie will write a song every week based on letters from their viewers.

“The Mega and the Songwriter” will have its pilot episode on Sept. 15 at 9 p.m.

Ogie’s other show on TV5 is “Tropang Trumpo” to start airing Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
