Throwback TV? It’s on jeepney

There are many reasons a lot of people consider the ’90s the best decade of all as far as TV viewing fare is concerned. Long before there was social media, at a time when today’s gadgets were just a germ of an idea, Pinoy kids and teenagers would entertain themselves by cramming into sofas, glued to the boob tube especially in the afternoon. Sounds rustic? It was reality.

Back then, we bet few of those kids had imagined what it would be like to see the TV idols of their favorite youth-oriented shows all grown up. Well, fast forward to Sept. 14, 2013 at the Eastwood Mall Open Park and they would have known when Jeepney TV introduced its “Throwback Everyday” campaign with a grand reunion concert featuring cast members of two famed ‘90s hit shows namely “Tabing Ilog” and “Ang TV.” Hosted by DJ Suzy and DJ CJ of Magic 89.9, the event was an experience that had one foot in the past, the other in the present.

The following were the highlights of the reunion:

+ After a special “throwback” screening of archived episodes from the well-loved shows, Vince and Jay of R&B band South Border, as well as musician-songwriter Barbie Almalbis, kicked off the show with songs from “Tabing Ilog” OST. Recall that it was Barbie who originally sang the eponymous theme song of that iconic barkadaserye. It was the start of a night-long sing-along party of unforgettable, well-loved anthems – the ultimate blast from the past, so to speak.

+ They may have gone their separate ways, but seeing Baron Geisler, Carlo Aquino, Vandolph, Gio Alvarez, Desiree del Valle and Roselle Nava collectively on one stage reminded of their wacky ways on hit kiddie show “Ang TV.” The six stars reminisced their younger days, prodded by questions from the hosts. The stars even played a ’90s pop culture and media game of “4 Pics 1 Word.” Desiree, Vandolph and Carlo’s team won.

+ The night wouldn’t have been complete if Roselle Nava hadn’t sung her hit “Dahil Mahal Na Mahal Kita.”

+ The loudest shrieks were reserved for Maya, er, Jodi Sta. Maria, and for the stunning Kaye Abad. Friends from way back, the two teased each other about their “Tabing Ilog” loveteam partners back in the days (Kaye with John Lloyd Cruz, Jodi with Baron).

+ The returning pair of Jinky Vidal and Top Suzara of Freestyle ended the night with songs of love and heartbreak from back when kids didn’t become “on” nor brokeup via tweet.

(Jeepney TV has been re-airing back-to-back episodes of “Tabing Ilog” since Sept. 15 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Jeepney TV is available on SkyCable channel 9 and other leading cable systems nationwide)
