They seem to be on a mission to revive the popularity of boy groups in the local front.

Though one might only be too quick to dismiss Voices of 5 as some sort of a Johnny-come-lately act left over from the ’90s – an era where the likes of Boyz II Men, N’Sync and Backstreet Boys were lording it over the charts – it would help to know that these boys are no, err, new kids on the block (pun unintended).

If anything, Voices Of 5 could actually be considered a super group of sorts as it is composed of vocalists from popular local R&B bands: Daryl “Drey” Reyes (from Akafellas), Sol Glass (South Border), Walton “West” Zerrudo (Freshmen), Jonathan Mendoza Santos (K24/7) and Darryl Ong (Version 4.0).

Just imagine the likes of say, Justin Timberlake, Nick Carter, Ronan Keating, Robbie Williams and Joey McIntyre, getting together and releasing an album and you’d have an idea how brilliant an idea it is.

In any case, these guys aren’t just about making the girlies swoon.

“We’re all about the music,” says Ong who, along with producer, manager and songwriter Teddy Katigbak, spearheaded the formation of the group late last year.

“Of course we would like to be popular and successful in the future but the bottom line is, we like to entertain people by giving them quality performance and music,” he added.

On the possibility of ego clashes considering each member already has his own following, Katigbak said, “May usapan na kami, suportahan kami all the way, kahit ano mangyari solid, walang sapawan.”

And while they are still active in their other groups, Katigbak explained, “Okay lang naman. Kasi may abiso naman and medyo hindi naman ganuon na ka-active ’yung iba. ’Yung iba naman eh proper scheduling lang naman para hindi makaapekto o makasira.”

Just recently, the group launched their eponymous debut CD hoping to reach more people with their music.

“It has two covers but most of it are originals, kasi we really want na, umpisa pa lang, ma-recognize ’yung group as an original act,” said Katigbak.

He pointed out that most of their songs are in Filipino, “because ang approach namin is to offset ‘yung smoothness na inherent sa R&B to make the material more relatable para sa masa.”

The group’s single “Pagkat Mahal Kita” is already getting good response this early, and its is, in fact, now catching fire on YouTube.

“We’re taking advantage talaga din of social media like Youtube and Facebook to spread the word kasi and thankfully maganda ang reaction ng mga tao,” Katigbak related.

As for the boy band concept, “We feel like there is a huge segment of the population na nami-miss na ’yung ganitong format,” he explained. “Besides we grew up idolizing those groups din naman like Boyz II Men and Backstreet Boyz so, sa amin, it’s like being true to our roots lang.”

In parting, he added, “’Tsaka ‘di ba nga may kasabihan, mas malakas ang marami kesa sa isa-isa lang? So, ito naisip namin: magsama-sama na para mas solid.”

Indeed, as the kids from “Voltes V” would say: “Let’s volt in!”
