Age doesn’t matter, does it?

Freddie Aguilar is happy and in love

Causing a bit of commotion lately is 60-year-old musician Freddie Aguilar who admits being in a relationship with a girl only 16 summers young.

Apparently, many Pinoys find the matter quite scandalous, with some airing disapproving opinion about the May-December affair.

But Aguilar has defended the relationship, insisting that there are no strict rules governing the heart.

It isn’t as if Aguilar is the only one prone to “persecution.” Other showbiz personalities have also dipped in the same waters; some of them, women.

Consider 65-year-old comedian Tiya Pusit who made news month ago after announcing her upcoming marriage to an IT specialist 38 years her junior.

There’s also the popular seer to the stars Madam Auring who had a relationship with a 24-year-old man. The couple professed their love on talk shows and joined various game shows together. The relationship ended mere two years later.

Of course, we are not saying that the situation is common only in show business as Aguilar pointed out in an interview with ANC’s “Headstart” on Friday.

“Well they can persecute me pero tumingin kayo sa paligid niyo mas marami pa ang matitindi ang ginagawa kaysa sa akin. These are also popular people, they brag about their wealth and their wives. Ako wala akong maraming asawa at maraming wealth na pinagyayabang ang asawa ko ay tatlo at pwede niyo silang tanungin kung naging masama akong asawa sa kanila ngayon na-in love ako sa pang-apat. Ngayon kung kasalanan ko pa ‘din yon parang pini-personal niyo ako dahil hindi lang po ako ang ganito sa Pilipinas.

“Maging totoo kayo. Tumingin kayo sa paligid niyo ang dami diyan ngayon ako pinagti-tripan niyo, so what? May utang ba ako sa inyo, masama ba ang umibig, kung wala kayong kasalanan batuhin niyo ako, ok? Masaya na kayo?” he said.

Aguilar didn’t drop names but he he has a point. No doubt, the matter is very much an “open secret” that involves not only the rich and famous but also many poor unknowns who can only be too weak and susceptible to, err, cupid’s arrows.

Aguilar and the girl haven’t talked about marriage yet. Still, he claims, they’re planning to have a baby.

“‘Yun ang pinag-usapan namin. Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Parang ang bata mo pa para magka-baby.’ Sabi naman niya, ‘Hindi, gusto kong magka-baby, e.’ So, we’re talking about it,” he said.
