They may not be as numerous as those who ran in the congressional and local elections in May but several celebrities have thrown their hat in the political arena and have finished campaigning for this Monday’s barangay elections.
Leading the pack is actress and barangay chair aspirant Angelika de la Cruz, who recently made headlines when an assailant later reported as a certain Pedro Benconado, a supporter of a rival candidate, tried to stab her during a campaign sortie in Longos, Malabon. The actress has already filed attempted murder charges against the suspect.
Jeremy Marquez, son of ParaƱaque councilor Alma Moreno and former Mayor Joey Marquez, is seeking a third term as Barangay Chairman in BF Homes, ParaƱaque.
Also running for chairman in Greenhills, San Juan is former San Juan councilor and TV personality Bobby Yan, brother of the late matinee idol Rico Yan. Among his supporters is former girlfriend Francine Prieto, who recently wished him good luck on Twitter.
For barangay kagawad, there’s newlywed basketball star and TV host Chris Tiu who is running for re-election in Urdaneta, Makati. Chris is currently on his honeymoon but some of his supporters have done his campaigning for him on Twitter.
Diminutive comedian Dagul, a mainstay of the kiddie gag show “Goin’ Bulilit”, is seeking reelection as kagawad in Rodriguez, Rizal.
There’s former “Wowowie” dancer Luningning (Lea Carla Santos) who is running for kagawad in Barangay Paligsahan in Quezon City. One of those openly campaigning for her in social media is former Viva Hot Babe Jaycee Parker.
Notwithstanding his loss in 2010, comedian Kuhol, best known as the sidekick of Jun Urbano’s famous alter ego Mr. Shooli in the hit TV series “Mongolian Barbecue”, is once again running for kagawad in Barangay North Fairview in Quezon City. Kuhol’s real name which voters can also write on their ballots is Phillip Supnet.
Retired boxer Bobby Pacquiao, younger brother of multi-titled world boxing champ Manny Pacquiao, is also running for kagawad in General Santos City.
Even though she is not seeking public office herself, “Positive” star Rufa Mae Quinto is actively campaigning for the re-election bid of sister Gie Sy Quinto in Barangay Pinagkaisahan in Quezon City.
Another showbiz kin who is seeking re-election is Bobby Papin, brother of singer-turned-politician Imelda Papin. Papin is running for kagawad in North Fairview in Quezon City.
