Multi-awarded actress Lorna Tolentino may have agreed to play the ruler of a country in an upcoming TV show, but this is where she draws the line when it comes to life imitating art.
“Ay hindi (talaga ako papasok sa pulitika). Hindi talaga eh. Okay lang sa akin maging kaibigan ng lahat ng pulitiko (laughs), pero hindi ako pwedeng maging pulitiko,” the Grandslam Best Actress told Bulletin Entertainment and other media during the grand launch of Kapuso primetime offering, the Dingdong Dantes-starrer “Genesis.”
In the series, Tolentino is Sandra Sebastian-Trinidad, the principled president who was elected upon the death of her vice president father (played by Robert Arevalo).
“Mas magiging farmer pa ako,” Tolentino quipped, adding that she is currently harvesting papayas in her farm in Cavite.
Looking very elegant and formal during the launch, Tolentino shared the story behind her shortly cropped hair and “powerful” look.
“It started with ‘Burgos,’ kasi true to life story ’yun, and si Editha Burgos maikli ang hair niya so I had to cut my hair short. After, dumating ang ‘Genesis’ offer, (I had to cut it again)… Bagay naman dahil wala namang presidente na mahaba ang buhok,” she related, referring to past Philippine women Presidents Cory Aquino and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Tolentino admitted that her role in “Genesis” required her to turn on the waterworks. She has been, after all, dubbed as “The Crying President.”
She shared, “Ang hirap kasi iyakin akong president. Minsan, ‘Paano ako iiyak dito eh nagsasalita ka lang?’ Kailangan iiyak ka. So naghahanap na lang ako sa sasabihin ko kung saan ako tatamaan sa puso para maiyak ako talaga sa eksena.”
The veteran actress said another challenging aspect of the role had been “’yung mga dialogues na siyempre hindi ka familiar kasi government eh, pulitika ito eh. Hindi naman ako nasabak talaga dito, although, mayroon naman akong mga kaibigan na pulitiko. Kahit paano, may konti kang knowledge sa nangyayari sa politics.”
Tolentino was last seen in last year’s family drama “Pahiram Ng Sandali,” also with Dingdong. Deeming her new series as heavier in terms of subject matter, she also said it taught her a lot of things about being a president, such as “having a chief of staff, protocols, tamang pagsaludo, ’yung lakad, and pagiging structured – it goes with what you wear.”

Single forever and ever
At 51, Tolentino declares with finality that she will be “forever single.” She has, in fact, been very vocal about this since her husband, Rudy “Daboy” Fernandez, passed in 2008.
When queried about possibly finding a new love, her quick response was, “Wala na ’yan! Diyos ko naman!”
She stressed, “Forever single na and ever!”
Expounding on her reaction, she said, “Unang-una matanda na ako.
“Pangalawa, sa mga anak ko na lang siguro ibubuhos (ang pagmamahal ko).
“Pangatlo, may apo na ako. Mas okay sa akin at mas nakakapagbigay pa sa akin ng challenge and energy ’yung apo ko – na makakarga ko, na maipapasyal ko… Siya ang nagbibigay sa akin ng motivation to be fit and healthy dahil gusto ko siyang abutan hanggang lumaki siya.”
Tolentino is just happy that her sons with Daboy – Ralph and Renz – are being given the opportunities her husband used to enjoy.
“Sigurado, nakangiti si Daboy sa GMA dahil binigyan nila ng chance si Ralph at Renz. Gusto kong maging successful sila dahil successful ang tatay nila. Nandoon na ang puso nila sa industry. Gusto kong makita ng marami ang development nila as actors at gusto kong magtagal sila dito (sa showbiz),” she said.
Tolentino added that the two will be signing contracts with the network soon, with Renz currently starring in “Prinsesa ng Buhay Ko” as the third wheel to the Aljur Abrenica-Kris Bernal love team.
“Genesis” also stars Rhian Ramos, TJ Trinidad, Jackie Lou Blanco, Irma Adlawan, Ronnie Henares, Carlo Gonzalez, Betong Sumaya, Luane Dy, Sasha Baldoza, Rainier Gison and Annette Samin, under the helm of directors Bb. Joyce Bernal and Mark Reyes. “Genesis” premieres Oct. 14 on GMA Telebabad.
