Luke Mejares
It is always playtime whenever I’m with seasoned singer Luke Mejares (we’re playmates, you know!), to the point that people think we are lovers (bromance lang ang peg…); or that he is simply gay just like me and millions out there (millions nga lang ba?!). But no, he is just fond of playing gay (weh, ’di nga?!).
“Magaling ako mag-bakla kasi marami akong kaibigang bakla at masaya silang kasama,” Luke explains.
He was my constant textmate during the pilot month of “My Husband’s Lover” on GMA and we would exchange hilarious messages while watching the show (parang nakaka-relate kasi kami. Chos!).
“Tuwang-tuwa ako at ’di ako naiinis na napagkakamalan akong bakla kasi ibig sabihin magaling akong umarte, and who knows balang araw maging artista ako,” Luke says, laughing (May balak pa talagang umarte ha?!).
With his love for the gays, I think he can even be an honorary member of some gay groups. In fact, he has a message to them (them talaga, ’di ako kasali?!): “Be proud of who you are and stand up for what you believe in” (makibaka na mga beki!).
However, behind this funny persona is a performer serious with his craft. In fact, after 15 years in the industry, his talent is still being recognized: The PMPC Star Awards for Music recently gave him the R&B Artist of The Year Award.
Though not his first trophy, he was nevertheless surprised to get it. “There are so many new artists that are supported by major TV networks. I felt that an old-timer like me wouldn’t even be considered for this award,” he notes.
This only proves that one can stay relevant even if he or she is already a veteran in the business (parang senior citizen na ha!).
“I constantly try to reinvent myself (to) bring something new to the table. I also make it a point to keep an open mind when it comes to music: Change in style, presentation, etc. I look up to other artists as well and respect the work that they do,” Luke shares.
With music as an integral part of his life, he constantly thinks of broadening his horizons. He dreams of working and collaborating with Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, and sees himself managing other musicians in the future.
“I just want to tell up-and-coming singers to be patient. Don’t give up. Not everything is smooth sailing. Our work is seasonal, but no hard work is without reward. Keep in mind to LOVE music first; success that comes with it is merely a bonus!!! Lastly, ALWAYS SING FROM THE HEART!!!:)” (You will always be in my heart, bro!).

As a proud Boholano, Luke Mejares will be part of several fund raising events for the Bohol earthquake victims. Tomorrow, Oct. 25, he will perform at a benefit concert organized by his fellow Boholanos, Cesar Montano and Noel Cabangon, at Teatrino in Greenhills. He will also be part of a special show at the Aposento Bar in Makati on Oct. 26. He is also accepting cash donations for his kababayans.
