Ariella Arida earns flak over ‘offensive’ comment about Latinas (Photo by Tony Pionilla/ File Photo)
It might be making mountains out of molehills but the Philippines’ Miss Universe bet Ariella Arida apparently made some “offensive” comments in an interview she did with ANC’s “Headstart” on Monday. That is, based on reactions her statement elicited online.
Following this, Arida immediately took to Twitter to apologize for her supposed faux pas.
“OM sorry. I didn’t mean to offend anyone from my last interview. I hope you guys can understand what Im trying to say,” she tweeted Tuesday.
This comes on the heels of the flak she received after saying in the interview that “Latinas cannot even speak… a complete sentence in English.”
This statement was part of her response to a question about her communication skills, in which she also admitted to “a lot of failings” in expressing herself and noted that the Miss Universe pageant is not just about speaking English. She pointed out that some candidates also cannot speak English perfectly and some even use translators.
“I think, it’s the Filipino who are very critical about this,” she also remarked.
Magic 89.9 DJ Mo Twister sparked the criticisms after posting a 15-seconds excerpt of the interview on his Instagram account (djmotwister), earlier Tuesday.
“We ALWAYS get so sensitive when someone says anything about us Filipinos (see Dan Brown, Alec Baldwin, and every other time we screamed murder) yet our girl representing our country, in a legit interview regarding the competition, says Latinas can’t put a sentence together in English. That would royally piss me off if I were of Latin descent.
“I’m also quite certain that a few of the Latina contestants can cook up a few intelligible lines in English that would leave Ariella here dizzy in her heels,” read part of DJ Mo’s caption.
DJ Mo’s post has already spurred an online argument and has amassed more than 400 comments as of this writing.
