‘Norte’ wins top prize at Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Festival

Lav Diaz’s “Norte, Sa Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” (Norte, The End of History) won the top prize at the Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Festival, producer Raymond Lee announced on Facebook on Wednesday.

Lee relayed the official statement of the international competition jury:

“After an enriching discussion, the jury arrived at a unanimous decision. The film we chose convinced us by both the epic scope of its story and the intimate portrayal of its characters and their grave fates. Through a subtle though multi-layered narration the film interweaves social, political, religious and literary aspects into an organic and humanistic whole. We were strongly impressed by the painterly crafted yet naturalistic tableaus with strong emotional acting, a fluid rhythm and strong, documentary-like dialogues. We are glad to announce that the Internationale Nurnberger Filmpreis der Menschenrechte goes to Norte, The End of History by Lav Diaz.”

The prize comes with a cash prize of 2,500 euros.

Billed as “Germany’s oldest and biggest human rights film festival”, the NIHRFF celebrates outstanding feature films, documentaries and animated productions, which have human rights as their main focus. The festival ran from October 2 to 9.

“Norte”, a 250-minute meditation on crime and punishment starring Archie Alemania and Sid Luecero, premiered to wide critical acclaim at the Un Certain Regard section of the 66th Cannes International Film Festival in April. It was also screened at the New York Film Festival in September.

It has been acquired for theatrical distribution by The Cinema Guild, a New York-based distributor of independent, foreign and documentary films.
