Off cam, John Lloyd plays hero, too

John Lloyd Cruz is a thinking actor thus his effective portrayals but few know that even the advocacies he supports are well thought of.

“Siyempre maraming nakakakilala sa iyo… na napakadali na mag impose na ‘Uy, tulungan mo kami.’ So naging careful lang naman ako and right now, especially nga isa yun sa mga dream ko when I get 30, makapag tayo ng sarili kong foundation,” he said at the launch of Biogesic’s new campaign dubbed “Ingat na Damang-Dama, Sa Bawat Kumot Ipapalaganap.”

It’s not to say that John Lloyd limits the help he extends. On the contrary, the actor believes that when one lends a hand “hanggang kaya, sige.” He recalls the time he and his mom started taking it upon themselves to help finance the schooling of some promising grade school and high school students in their hometown.

“Maraming ganung cases: Gustong makapag aral – ang ganda ganda ng grado – tapos teka lang, kailangan kong tumigil kasi wala akong pang college. Although wala kaming legit na foundation (ng mom ko), in our own little ways, we try to help…”

Aside from kids who face obstacles to finish schooling (“yung tipong naglalakad ng ilang kilometro para lang makapasok at yung mga walang libro”), his heart goes out to victims of natural calamity and those stricken with breast cancer.

Lloydy even taps the company he endorses for help and if possible, immerses himself in communities that need assistance. He mentioned wanting to return to Zamboanga for the longest time, but the present situation there prevents him from doing so.

He is happy that Biogesic has partnered with Yellow Boat Hope of Foundation that provides certain communities with boats to help school children go to school safe and dry.

According to a release, the foundation has extended its projects to include school and medical programs, scholarships and even livelihood projects.

Recently, Lloydy, along with a group of volunteers, went to an island in Sagay, Negros Occidental to distribute thermal blankets and medicines to the island’s more than 600 families.

“We’ve gone a long way to reach their island but it was all worth it. The experience is both humbling and inspiring,” John Lloyd was quoted to have said, adding, ““We hope that through the campaign…we could make them feel loved and cared for.”
