Angelica Panganiban, Joel Torre lead all winners in Cinema One Originals filmfest awards

Adolfo Alix, Jr.’s “Alamat ni China Doll” won six awards in the Cinema One Plus category of the ongoing Cinema One Originals film festival in ceremonies held Saturday night at the Dolphy Theater of the ABS-CBN Compound in Quezon City.

The story of a woman whose criminal past comes back to haunt her, the film won Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Music, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Actress for Angelica Panganiban.

In a two-cornered fight between her and Alessandra de Rossi of Keith Sicat’s “Woman of the Ruins”, the only other nominee in the category, Angelica won the fifth acting award of her career and her second as Best Actress.

Alfonso “Borgy” Torre III’s “Kabisera”, whose story many compare with the hit TV series “Breaking Bad”, won Best Director, Best Supporting Actress for Bing Pimentel and Best Actor for Joel Torre.

Experiencing a career renaissance of sorts, Joel won his second straight Best Actor trophy for this year after being lionized at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival for “On The Job”.

“Woman of the Ruins” bagged two awards, a surprise Best Supporting Actor recognition for Peque Gallaga who did not attend the awards night and the equally prestigious Audience Choice award.

Mes de Guzman likewise continued his winning streak with a Best Screenplay nod for “Sitio” and the Jury Choice award honoring the ensemble cast of the film while “Blue Bustamante” managed to snag Best Production Design.

In the Cinema One Currents category, “Riddles of my Homecoming”, Arnel Mardoquio’s silent film about the Lumads and Moros of Mindanao, led all winners with five awards: Best Director, Best Music, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography and the Jury Prize.

It did not win Best Picture, however. That honor went to Jet Leyco’s “Bukas Na Lang Sapagkat Gabi Na”, which also won Best Screenplay.

Ian Loreños’ “Saturday Night Chills” won three awards: Best Editing, Best Supporting Actor for David Chua and Best Actor for its three lead stars, Rayver Cruz, Matteo Guidicelli and Joseh Marco.

Vivian Velez lived up to her frontrunner status as her portrayal of the title role in “Bendor” was rewarded with a Best Actress recognition. The honor is her first fourth Best Actress trophy and her first in 27 years after winning it for “Paradise Inn” in 1986.

“Bendor” won two awards, the other being Best Supporting Actress for Anna Luna.

In addition to the regular awards, two special Philippine Cinema One Originals achievement awards were handed out. This year’s recipients are comebacking filmmaker Elwood Perez and Regal Films matriarch “Mother” Lily Monteverde.
