The Miss Universe 2013 National Costume Show may not have a bearing on the main competition proper of the pageant but it was still largely viewed as a missed opportunity for Miss Philippines Ariella Arida.
Wearing a traditional terno outfit reportedly created by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza accentuated by a feathered head dress, Arida received kudos for the way she carried her national costume with grace and elegance.
But the costume itself is considered a disappointment by fans, especially in comparison to the more colorful and creative attire worn by other contestants. This could be fodder for the growing criticism that Binibining Pilipinas pageant director Stella Marquez-Araneta, a Colombian, has been favoring a coterie of Colombian designers at the expense of Filipino designers.
“As expected, the Latina beauties showcased their peacock-like dresses while the other contestants took everybody to Carnival with their grandiose and finely detailed costumes,” Lou Ramon Aguila reported in the International Business Times.
However, the runway show itself received its own share of criticism where it was compared by media to everything from a Halloween party to a cosplay event.

“Held this year in Moscow, the annual National Costume Show is intended to showcase each contestant’s home country through an authentic costume… which is where it gets a little strange. Erin Brady of the United States represented us in a plastic “Transformers” costume (Michael Bay would be proud?), while Alexandra Fribourg of Sweden honored her country’s Viking past in a metallic bustier and a sword. Miss Belgium Noémie Happart looked like she was dressed as the Devil complete a spiky red spear, and Miss Great Britain Amy Willerton wore royal robes so sexy we bet even Prince Philip would have a thing or two to say,” the Huffington Post reported.
Be that as it may, many of her own fans felt that Arida could have given a stronger statement and a more lasting impression on the event given that she is regarded as a frontrunner in the competition.
On the Facebook fan page, Miss Philippines Road To Miss Universe, FB user Theresa Maria posted, “Ara’s national costume is simple and elegant. But what happen(ed)….. miss universe national costumes….level up! Most wear like tribal, futuristic, transformer costumes”.
Another Facebook user, Leonardo Carillo posted, “Ara’s national costume is a major distraction to her winning, I reckon .Popular sya (kaya) kailangan nya talaga magpapansin sa mga judges just like Ms. USA.”
Although Miss USA Erin Brady received mixed reviews from her Transformers-inspired outfit, she still scored big on the National Costume Show as her head-turning outfit is showcased in just about every online coverage of the event.
Miss Philippines, on the other hand, was nowhere to be found in the photo galleries of the event’s standout candidates posted by the Huffington Post, the New York Daily News, Telegraph.co.uk and the Deccan Chronicle, among others.
