Days after they lost communication, Daniel Padilla has reconnected with his 70-year-old grandmother, Thelma Ilago, who survived the aftermath of super-typhoon ‘Yolanda’ in Palo, Leyte.
Despite her dreadful experience, Ilago now manages to smile, more so in seeing Daniel’s house and everything else he’s been able to amass since joining show business.
Speaking with ABS-CBN News, Ilago recounted how the teen star cracked a joke after their reunion.
“Si DJ, natutulog ako tapos, ang hilig kasi niyan na nag-jo-joke. Sabi niya, ‘Lola, akala ko lola namatay ka na.’ Sabi ko, ‘Naku, ano ka ba? Malakas ang prayer ko,’” she shared of their conversation.
In an earlier press interview, the 18-year-old actor expressed his worry for the safety of his relatives.
“Sobra (akong nag-alala) kasi kamag-anak namin. Bago sa atin ‘yung mga ganong pangyayari. Pray ako nang pray at nasa isip ko na walang sukuan,” he related.
Ilago’s coming to Manila is like a gift to her daughter, Daniel’s mother Karla Estrada, who’s celebrating her birthday.
Notwithstanding her good condition now, Ilago still wants to go back in the province.
Karla said she understands her mother’s desire.
“Pagtanda ko eh du’n (din) ako nagpa-plano (na tumira). Pero alam ko na kung saan ako banda,” she said, laughing. “Du’n ako sa… bulubundukin.”
Daniel’s family, however, is still mourning for some of their relatives and friends who died from the strong typhoon.
“Meron pa kaming mga tiyuhin na namatay, mga pinsan na banda du’n malapit sa pier ng Tacloban na namatay,” Karla said.
The family offered a mass to express gratitude for the survivors and to pray for the other victims of the ‘Yolanda’ onslaught.
