How John Ford Coley loves Pinoys!

American singer-songwriter John Ford Coley has been to the Philippines more than 20 times that’s why he is regarded by his friends back home as an “authority” when it comes to the question, “Who is the Filipino?”

“Once, I even had one of your tourists guides scratching his head because I seem to know more about this particular historical place in your country than him,” he told Bulletin Entertainment a day before his concert at Solaire Resort & Casino.

The man whose hits include “I’d Really Love To See You Tonight,” “Just Tell Me You Love Me,” and “It’s Sad To Belong” together with Dan England so loves the Philippines that upon hearing of the recent natural calamities that befell it in weeks past, he had no second thoughts donating his talent fee from his local shows to the survivors. It is said that John will also pass a basket around during show time so the audience could donate whatever they can afford.

“It just breaks your heart knowing that these tragedies happened to the most gentle and caring people in the world. I’ve always had a soft spot for people who know how to smile and you guys, you do that a lot,” he said.

John has cultivated strong friendships with many Filipinos, including one of his usual concert producers in the country, Danee Samonte. In fact, John personally called him up from abroad out of concern just hours following the earthquake that struck Bohol and Cebu a few weeks ago. When he learned about super typhoon “Yolanda,” the singer-songwriter told his friends to help in any way possible.

“It’s gonna take long rehabilitation, I know that. People must dip into their pockets once, twice, as much as they can give. Prayers must be said and these will be heard,” he said.

Next on John’s plans are performances at Widus Convention Center in Clark on Nov. 19, Youth Square in Hong Kong on Nov. 21 and SMX Convention Center Davao on Nov. 28. He will then return to the US for the holidays before buckling down for more shows in 2014, and possibly write materials for a new album.

At this point in his life and career, John has learned to balance things by working some then living some. As an author, too, he is into a lot of research and study mostly about history. During our talk, the singer-songwriter talked about his many interests that range from the Torah and the kind of women he likes, to his guitars at home and even some “crappy” songs he’d written that he hopes won’t ever see the light of day!

Will he ever give up music? Has retirement crossed his mind?

“No, I’m enjoying myself too much doing what I’ve always loved. So why?”
