The British-produced Filipino crime drama “Metro Manila” scored a total of five nominations at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) on Monday, including nods for two members of its all-Filipino cast — Best Supporting Actor for John Arcilla and Most Promising Newcomer for Jake Macapagal.
Arcilla was nominated for his portrayal of a cunning armored truck senior officer who befriends and grooms a new recruit played by Macapagal.
“I wish this news can put a smile or even a brief sigh of relief to my devastated fellow Filipinos,” Arcilla said on his Facebook account early Tuesday. His message came attached with a press release from BIFA about the nominations which were announced by British actor Ewan McGregor.
Besides Arcilla and Macapagal’s nominations, “Metro Manila” also earned nods for Best Independent British Film, Best Director, and Best Achievement in Production.
Directed, co-produced and co-written by British director Sean Ellis, “Metro Manila” was shot entirely in the Philippines and featured an all-Filipino cast who who spoke Filipino all throughout the film.
It premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival where it won an Audience Award. In September, prior to its commercial release in the Philippines, it was chosen as the United Kingdom’s entry in the Academy Awards’ best foreign language film category.
