Period film ‘Angustia’ gets R-18 rating from MTRCB

After the postponement of its initial screening, Kristian Sendon Cordero’s Cinema One Originals Festival entry “Angustia” has finally premiered on Nov. 13, after it was reclassified R-18 by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).

“Maraming salamat sa mga naghintay, at nagdasal na mabigyang permiso na maipalabas ang pelikulang ito. Tuloy na po ang pagpapalabas ng Angustia mamayang gabi…” part of Cordero’s post on his Facebook account read.

“Sana’y magkita-kita tayo at suportahan ninyo ang obrang ito,” the director continued.

The period film, which stars Alex Medina, Jazmin Llana, Vic Loquias, Mitch Smith and Maria Isabel Lopez, had its original premiere date, Nov. 12, delayed after it received an initial X rating from MTRCB.

Cinema One channel head Ronald Arguelles nevertheless assured festival attendees that “‘Angustia’ will still be shown in the festival after its reclassification.”

Actress Maria Isabel Lopez, who plays a babaylan in the film, also expressed her lament over the postponement of the movie’s original premiere.

She wrote on Facebook: “Kelan pa mangyayari sa Pilipinas ang ‘Free the Artist Movement?’ I’ve had this problem with my films during the 80s.. It’s already 2013… After 3 decades in the industry… ‘Ganito kami noon.. Ganito pa rin ngayon!’”

She also related on Instagram (beautyqueenmil) that her director is “‘sanitizing’ the #controversial film and re editing scenes appropriate to the Catholic Church and the MovieTvReview &Classification Board,” and hopes “for a screening of the uncut version at the #UPFilm Inst.”

“Angustia” also stars Alex Medina, Jazmin Llana, Vic Loquias, and Mitch Smith.
