A handful of mainstream artists and celebrities lead the country’s nominees for BroadwayWorld’s annual theater fans choice awards.
Described as “the largest theater site covering London’s West End,” BroadwayWorld.com started recognizing theater acts 10 years ago, from “more than 50 regional markets across the globe, including the Philippines.”
After breaking out in the industry with “My Husband’s Lover,” actor-model Tom Rodriguez has proven that he is also effective on stage with his nomination as Best Actor (Musical) and Best Crossover Artist (Mainstream to Theater) for his title role in Atlantis Productions’ “Aladdin.”
Songstress Aicelle Santos tied Tom with also a couple of nods, vying for the Best Actress (Musical) and Best Crossover Artist awards with her work in “Katy,” the biographical musical highlighting jazz vocalist Katy de la Cruz.
Rachelle Ann Go, who has recently been chosen to play the character of bar girl Gigi in the West End revival of “Miss Saigon,” is aiming for her second straight Best Actress (Musical) award, this time for her portrayal of Jane in Viva Atlantis Theatricals’ “Tarzan.”
Pinoy rock vocalists who ventured into the performance arts also had their share of nominations: Marc Abaya (Kjwan) scores a Best Crossover Artist nod for his turn in “Closer;” and Ebe Dancel (formerly of Sugarfree) with a Best Filipino Musical (New/Revival) nomination for “Sa Wakas.”
Veteran actor Tirso Cruz III is among the nominees for Best Featured Actor for “Katy,” while Aiza Seguerra (“Aladdin”) and G Tongi (“Piaf”) are nominated for separate Best Featured Actress awards, for the Musical and Play categories, respectively.
Filipino theater fans can only vote once until Dec. 31, with winners to be announced early January next year, according to BroadwayWorld.com.
