After landing in the Top 10 of the recently held Miss Universe pageant, Pinay bet MJ Lastimosa looks forward to mentoring the coming batch of Binibining Pilipinas hopefuls.
“I would love to share to them the experience and the journey kasi alam kong makaka-inspire (yon) and then makakapag-motivate para lalong pagbutihan nila,” she said on “Unang Hirit.” “Para malay mo, next year, makuha na natin talaga ’yung crown.”
The North Cotabato native is happy to return home especially after going off the loop at the height of the pageant. She admits shunning social media then in order to focus on the task at hand. Looking back, she thinks it was a good decision.
“Kaya siguro ’yung aura ko (dun sa pageant) is positive lang kasi nagpahinga muna ko sa social media. Para ’yung presence ko (ay) nasa Miss Universe – I’m present, I’m experiencing the whole journey, embracing it, and talagang naka-focus ako sa competition. Kaya siguro hindi ako naapektuhan ng kahit anumang sinasabi ng outside world (laughs)!”
Q&A
Not making it to the Miss Universe Top 5, MJ wasn’t able to take part in the question and answer round, which was slightly modified to include a question from a Facebook user.
“Excited (pa naman) ako kasi nagkaro’n ako ng chance mag-answer ng mga questions sa Facebook nung nag-live chat kami,” she recalled. “Ang saya, sobrang kakaiba ’yung mga tanong ng mga tao, kaya nilu-look forward ko ’yun.”
If she has had the chance to answer the question “What is the greatest contribution of your country to the entire world?”, MJ said she would’ve pointed out how the Philippines taught everyone the “spirit of volunteerism.”
“Kasi ’di ba ang dami nating pinagdaanan na typhoon? And because of that, na-witness natin ’yung every nation (is) helping, hand in hand, para ma-survive natin ’yung catastrophe na pinagdaanan natin,” she explained.
MJ noted how countries extended a hand to the country despite cultural differences. “Kung talagang ginagawa natin ’to (volunteerism) sa lahat ng bansa na may pinagdaraanan, walang mahirap.”
She believes being able to instill the values of cooperation and unity – “(kahit) hindi naman tayo ganung kalaking bansa and very powerful” – is “something really big.”
Shoulda, coulda
MJ regrets nothing because she knows “there are things that are out of our control” and that beauty pageants will always be “subjective – minsan in our favor, minsan it’s not.”
Even so, it’s no reason to be negative “kasi hindi lang naman ’yung korona ’yung gain mo sa pageant, maraming nakukuha, marami tayong natututunan sa mga beauty pageant, and the inspiration that you give to the people.”
It helped that “paglabas ko, sabi nung ibang mga girls, ‘You should’ve been (in) the Top 5!’” She admitted feeling good that the other contestants thought so highly of her performance in the pageant.
