The other side of Sam YG

Known for his playful and naughty brand of humor, mostly evident on the radio show “Boys Night Out (BNO),” Sam YG now wants to show fans his “more serious” side.

“‘Night Out’ has been going on for almost nine years now so I want people to see a different side na hindi pa nakikita ng mga tao,” he says.

Sam adds, “Medyo magseseryoso na kami kasi walang nagseseryoso sa amin,” referring to fellow Magic 89.9 DJs and “BNO” co-hosts Tony Toni and Slick Rick.

The change, he says, will be seen when Season 2 of their TV show “Boys Ride Out” airs on Channel 9 (9TV) in March.

“Mas credible kami dito sa show kasi dati incredible lang kami eh,” Sam shares, laughing.

“We’re gonna maintain the humor and the pagkapilyo namin but this time, we’ll do in-depth interviews with interesting people; celebrities, politicians, icons in societies and squeeze out more information about them,” he elaborates.

Whether or not people would appreciate the new version of him and his fellow DJs, Sam can’t say. Still, he believes, “That’s gonna be a challenge for me, (for) us. ’Yun ang interesting eh. Like I say, (I) always wanna do new things.”

The heart doctor

Listening to different problems for nine long years, particularly on matters of the heart, has been a continuous learning process for Sam.

“It’s always two-way. As the DJ, I’d be able to hear different experiences, learn from what other people went through while they also learn from me,” says he.

The radio jock says he treats callers equally and never takes any of them for granted, believing these people call their show “for a reason.”

Sam singled out Jojo The Love Survivor as his most unforgettable caller. Apparently, the man became despondentafter his first-ever girlfriend cheated on him.

“He was a live suicidal caller we had two and a half years ago. He called the show as he was about to jump off the 7th floor of a building in Makati. He was on the window, ready to jump out. We had him on air for 45 minutes telling him not to jump,” he narrates.

Sam proudly shared how he and his fellow DJs were able to help Jojo, who now co-hosts “Boys Night Out.”

Sticky situations aside, Sam says the hardest question ever thrown at him was: “Anong mas mahirap, mag-hold on o mag-let go?”

He explains, “Pati ako hindi ko alam ang sagot pero that would be on a case to case basis kasi minsan maling-mali ka na, martir na martir ka na, pero nagpapaka-tanga ka pa. I have to make you realize if the person is fighting with you or you’re fighting alone.”

Sam admits it’s hard for him walk the talk and take his own advice. “Ganun naman palagi eh, ’pag ikaw, hindi mo na kayang i-apply sa sarili mo,” says he

Although currently single because “walang nagi-invest ng feelings sa akin,” the love guru says he also asks for other people’s opinion when he encounters problems because he believes “no man is an island.”

“Kapag andu’n ka na sa situation, it’s hard to really figure things out. It’s always good to have somebody to talk to,” he relates.

Sam, along with DJs Tony Toni and Slick Rick, recently hosted the Gillette Mach 3 Turbo shaving challenge at Eastwood City Mall where they also dispensed shaving regimen tips for men.

Gillette Mach 3 Turbo is said to provide a closer shave with zero redness.
