It could have been Zsa Zsa Padilla’s best Christmas gift ever, her winning the Best Actress trophy at the recently concluded Metro Manila Film Festival’s New Wave Category.
She won the award for her performance as a dying lawyer in “M. (Mother’s Maiden Name).” The film was produced by Quantum Films producer, Atty. Joji Alonso.
“M” is currently showing in select SM and Ayala mall theaters.
Atty. Alonso is also the producer of the filmfest mainstream entry “English Only, Please,” which is expected to hit the R150M mark this weekend as it is on extended run in several theaters.
In “M. (Mother’s Maiden Name),” which was graded “A” by the Cinema Evaluation Board, Zsa Zsa plays a single mom dying of cancer. The film shows the great disparity in medical treatments afforded the rich and the poor.
Also starring in the film are Nico Antonio, Dennis Padilla, Sue Prado and Gloria Sevilla.
“I read Zig Dulay’s script at nagandahan ako sa role ko as Atty. Bella Monteclaro. Mataray siya at ang gaganda ng lines ko rito na quotable quotes. Maganda rin ang story about two moms, ako at si Gloria Sevilla. I discover I’m dying from pancreatic cancer at siya naman she has daughter, Sue Prado, who’s dying from a chronic liver disease,” Zsa Zsa said.
“M” will compete for the Circulo Precolumbino awards at the 31st Bogota International Film Festival in Columbia in October.
It is also included in the exhibition selection of the Hawaii International Filmfest in November.

‘HALIK SA HANGIN,’ A DIFFERENT LOVE STORY
“Halik Sa Hangin,” which opens tomorrow, Jan. 28 in theaters nationwide, is being touted as the most anticipated film of the year, as it marks the first screen collaboration of Gerald Anderson, JC de Vera and Julia Montes.
All three of them expressed admiration for each other’s talent. They were also delighted working together in a beautiful movie project.
Gerald said, “I love the script, pulidong-pulido ang pagkagawa. I was really impressed by the story.”
Directed by Manny Palo and written by Patrick John Valencia, “Halik Sa Hangin,” is described as “a love story with a twist.”
According to the director, the love scenes between Julia and Gerald took a whole day to shoot.
With her performance in the film, one would say that Julia didn’t win the Gawad Tanglaw Best Actress award for nothing. As an actress, she was rated a “10” by co-stars Gerald and JC.
Also in the cast are Ina Raymundo and Edu Manzano.
