Elton John to marry longtime partner

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Pop icon Elton John says he will tie the knot with partner David Furnish now that his native Britain has legalized gay marriage.

The top-selling artist told NBC’s “Today” show that “we’ll do it very quietly.”

“But we will do it and it will be a joyous occasion,” John added.

The couple, who have two children together, entered into a civil partnership in 2005.

A historic law legalizing same-sex marriage took effect in England and Wales on Saturday, the final stage in the long fight for legal equality for gays and lesbians.

Civil partnerships have been legal there since 2005.

“I’m very proud of Britain and the laws that we’ve seen come into existence since we’ve been together,” John said in excerpts of the interview set to air Monday.

“For this legislation to come through is joyous, and we should celebrate it. We shouldn’t just say, ‘Oh, well we have a civil partnership. We’re not going to bother to get married.’ We will get married.”

Furnish told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in a separate interview that an intimate ceremony would take place in May.

“I think what we’ll do is go to a registry office in England in May, and take the boys with us, and a couple of witnesses,” the publication quoted him as saying.

Pia Wurtzbach hints she’s done with pageants after shocking loss in Bb. Pilipinas

Hours after her shocking loss in the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 beauty pageant where she was widely considered a shoo-in for one of its five crowns, Pia Wurtzbach took to social media to thank her supporters and hint that her days as a beauty pageant contestant may be over.

“GRATEFUL that I was able to experience what it’s like to be a part of the pageant world. When I placed 1st RU last year, I gave all my time, effort & love to my job. I had so much fun! I just tried again because I wanted to know of this was really meant for me. But how do you know if you don’t take chances, right? I’m glad I made it this far. No doubt that I learned so much from it. I’m a better person now than I was a year ago. Thank you to my mentors from Aces & Queens for teaching me everything I know & transforming me! & to my supporters for pushing me & encouraging me. THANK YOU!! Time to turn the page & move on to a new chapter!” went her latest post on Instagram.

Five hours before that, the 24-year-old Filipino-German from Cagayan de Oro City, who is also a professional chef and a former contract artist of Star Magic, posted the word “Maktub” on her Twitter account. Maktub is an Arabic word which means “it is written”.

Pia had been a heavy favorite right from the onset of the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 with the introduction of the 40 candidates last January 28. With every pre-pageant event, she consistently figured among everyone’s top choices, including final fearless forecasts that had her winning one of the five titles up for grabs.

Her supporters blamed her loss on judge Senator Sonny Angara, who opted to ask his question in Tagalog which elicited a reply in the same language from Pia. The Tagalog exchange between the two prompted fans to believe that it alienated the foreign judges in the pageant, namely reigning Miss Universe Gabriela Isler, Sofitel Hotel general manager Adam Laker, US Consul Officer William Christopher and Mexico’s Ambassador to the Philippines Julio Camarena Villasenor.

But in his own tweets, Angara said he had explained Pia’s answer to Isler and Camarena, who were both impressed. Angara also revealed that in the final vote, Pia was tied for 6th or 7th place so at best, she could have only duplicated her runner-up feat last year.

Just the same, it was obvious from the get-go that Pia was determined to win. In a pre-pageant interview with InterAksyon when the 40 candidates visited the PLDT Home offices, Pia sounded assured and confident and said that she’s having a much easier time in this year’s competition compared to last year when she finished 1st runner-up.

“Finally, I’m able to let the real me out. Hindi na masyadong robotic na pageant conscious, mas natural na talaga,” she declared.

She also said that she learned a lot from the previous title holders that she often appeared with in public during their reign.

“Iba-iba sila ng personality. With Mutya (Datul), she’s very carefree and natural. Cindy (Miranda) is a perfectionist so that’s what I learned from her. Ara (Arida) is also very carefree. And she shines because she doesn’t overthink while Bea is very articulate especially so I got a lot of pointers from each one,” she noted.

Pia could learn one more thing from newly crowned Miss Universe-Philippines Mary Jean Lastimosa: perseverance.

Lastimosa continued to work hard and kept joining Bb. Pilipinas until she finally won the big crown that she has always been shooting for on her third attempt.

Pia’s fans believe that like MJ, she should not yet give up on her dreams. At 24, she is still qualified to join Bb. Pilipinas up to two more times before she reaches the age limit of 26.

Fans are likewise urging her to join this year’s Miss World Philippines where she could be a worthy successor to Megan Young. Then there’s also Mutya ng Pilipinas and Miss Philippines Earth where there are also several titles up for grabs.

4Minute wins first comeback trophy

K-pop quintet 4Minute notched their first TV music chart triumph since making their comeback with their new mini-album “4Minute World,” which contains five tracks including the lead single “Whatcha Doin’ Today.”

The girl group performed the title track on SBS “Inkigayo” on March 30, competing with other artists including CNBLUE, Girls’ Generation, 2NE1, Orange Caramel, Boys Republic and JJCC.

In the end, 4Minute won with 8,928 points, edging out Girls’ Generation, which got 8,772 points and 2NE1, which had 7,648 points.

4Minute said making a comeback is never easy considering the competition.

“To be honest, it’s never been easy. We always comeback when the house is full of other singers. The same goes for this album (laughter). You can’t release an album if you’re searching for the right timing. We

subconsciously knew that we would face hard competition no matter when we made our comeback,” said member SoHyun, according to a report on EnewsWorld and Newsen.com.

Hyuna said they released their album when other groups made their comeback.

“The title song was completed awhile back. But since there is right timing, we decided to wait out a little, but then all these awesome groups made their comeback. So we decided to come back, because we’ll

never be able to if we waited for the right timing. We thought that if it’s a good song and we’re confident about it, then many people will like our song,” she said.

The girl group said they are proud of “4Minute World” since they all participated in making the album.

“It’s our comeback in a year. We feel more attached to this album since we participated in everything, including the jacket photo, music video and choreography. I think the album expresses the members’ colors well since we participated in this album the most,” they said.

They added that the new album shows a new side of 4Minute.

“Thanks to the success of our last album, the company was very supportive of us and took in our requests. This album is an extension to the last one, but it also shows new sides of us. The stage is arranged differently and we felt like we were going down the runway during practice. The range of movement of bigger and we have more number of dancers too. I think you’ll enjoy watching the different stage arrangements,” 4Minute said.

Marian Rivera named Ambassador for Women and Children with Disabilities

MANILA, Philippines | Television actress Marian Rivera is lending her star power to promote the rights of women and children with disabilities in the country.

Rivera said the public and the government should be sensitive to their condition and provide them with the needed support so that they can enjoy the same access to education, livelihood, health and social activities.

“Kung anuman po ang magagawa ko sa inyo, gagawin ko sa abot ng aking makakaya,” she said in a forum at the House of Representatives where she was named Ambassador for Women and Children with Disabilities.

In 2009, Rivera said she wore arm crutches in 140 episodes of the fantasy series “Darna” when she portrayed the role of the lead character, a crippled teenager named Narda who turns into a superheroine with the aid of a magical stone.

“Hindi ko po lubos maisip na ina-acting ko lang iyon sa isang araw. Aaminin ko po na nahihirapan talaga ako. So ngayon po na nakikinig ako sa inyo, ano pa kaya yung mga totoong hinaharap ito araw-araw o kaya panghabanmbuhay? Napakahirap,” she said.

The actress said she also recently played the role of a sister of someone with Down Syndrome, who experienced discrimination.

She said that a person’s disability should not be the basis of judging his character, stressing that a number of women with disability emerged successful in their career.

“I did some research and found out that Jessica Cox, who is armless, is a licensed pilot. And there’s Rosel Ambubuyog, who graduated summa cum laude from Ateneo despite being blind,” she added.

Rivera said she had also been exposed to people with mental illness during her on-the-job training in college. She finished a course in Psychology at the De La Salle University – Dasmarinas in Cavite.

Carmen Zubiaga, acting executive director of the National Council on Disability Affairs, said they chose Rivera as ambassador because they believed the roles she had played in the past made her aware and sympathetic to the plight of women and children with disabilities.

“Marian can help if she urges her fellow actors and the public to support the education for children with disabilities. With her popularity, the call will ring to the whole nation,” she said.

Zubiaga said support should be institutionalized so that parents of children with disabilities would be assured that someone will take care of their children.

She also proposed a public-private partnership for the establishment of a special school for children with disabilities so that they can have better access to education.
