Danny Pudi is in Manila for some “Community” work.

The 35-year-old American comedian and star of the hit sitcom “Community” is in town courtesy of Fox International. He attended the convention of the Philippine Cable Television Association at the SMX Convention Center on Wednesday.

At the event, local comedian Ramon Bautista snapped a picture with Pudi, who plays the nerdy Palestinian-Polish film student Abed Nadir in the pop culture-savvy sitcom.

“Bagong tropa ko, si Abet. Community work daw ginagawa niya hihi,” Bautista quipped in the caption of the photo which he posted on his Twitter feed. (My new buddy, Abet [sic]. He’s here for community work hihi).

“Community”, about a study group and faculty members of a community college in the fictional town of Greendale, Colorado, is currently on its fifth season.

Pudi has a small role in the blockbuster superhero film “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” as a SHIELD employee.

Louie Ignacio’s biggest challenge

Louie Ignacio

Earning a slot at the 10th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, as part of the Director’s Showcase Category, is Luisito “Louie” Lagdameo Ignacio’s “Asintado.”

During a recent interview, Louie said he used his experiences in directing concerts, musicals, soap operas, movies and TV commercials in helming “Asintado.” He also used his understanding of colors as culled from his experiences as a painter in creating the film. He wants “Asintado” to be as vivid as possible.

“Ang pelikulang ito ay combination ng films at paintings parang pinipinta ko ang mga eksena,” he said.

He is confident that people who are familiar with his work would definitely see a different Louie Ignacio via “Asintado.”

Louie shared that the inspiration behind “Asintado” is the Taong Putik Festival held every June 24 at Barangay Bibiclat, Aliaga, Nueva Ecija.

He is honored that the film is now among Cinemalaya entries.

“When I tried for Cinemalaya, siyempre sa dami ng sumasali dyan, may luck factor. Siyempre pag sinuwerte ka, nagustuhan ng committee ‘yung entry mo, magiging proud ka. I’m very happy and honored na napasali ako,” intimated Louie.

So what’s his goal in joining Cinemalaya?

“Kasi di ba sa industriya natin bihira dumating ang mga magagandang materyal? At ‘yung materyal na sinubmit ko feeling ko ‘yun na. Sabi ko nga bago ako umalis sa industriyang ito gusto kong mag-iwan ng magandang pelikula. I think ito na ‘yun kasi walang producer na basta mag-invest sa ganitong klaseng movie,” he pointed-out.

Written by Palanca awardee Socorro Villanueva, “Asintado” stars Aiko Melendez, Gabby Eigenmann, Rochelle Pangilinan, Rita de Guzman, Jak Roberto, Jake Vargas and Migs Cuaderno. Its executive producers are Jose Mari Abacan, Elvira Yap Go, Oliverio Laperal Jr. and Louie himself.

Is he looking forward to winning awards at the Festival? “Ibinibigay ‘yan pag gustong ibigay ni Lord. Ang sisiguraduhin ko lang gagandahan ko ‘yung movie. Manalo, matalo, at least maganda ‘yung movie na pinaghirapan namin,” commented Louie.

‘Captain America’ sequel tops PH box office with biggest opening weekend this year

Chris Evans as Captain America in 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'.

Throwing his mighty shield on the big screen for the second time in three years, Marvel superhero Captain America is on course to break box office records worldwide.

With rave reviews and positive word of mouth, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” has so far surpassed box office expectations and has already exceeded the gross of 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” in most territories.

In the Philippines alone, the film opened with a staggering gross of P155.51 million, which topples the opening weekend numbers of other movies based on Marvel superheroes such as “Thor” (P59.5M), “Captain America: The First Avenger” (P90.8M) and “Iron Man 2” (P104.9M).

According to Victor Cabrera, managing director of distributor Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Philippines, the film’s opening gross not only represents the biggest opening weekend for a foreign title (dethroning “300: Rise of an Empire”) so far in 2014 but also the biggest March opening ever in the industry.

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is currently showing in 453 screens nationwide including 8 IMAX theaters. The film’s gross is led by the SM Group claiming the three biggest opening receipts in SM North EDSA (P8.41-M), SM Mall of Asia (P8.33-M) and SM Megamall (P7.62-M).

Other theaters where “The Winter Soldier” performed particularly well include Trinoma (P5.16-M), Glorietta 4 (P4.90-M), SM Cebu (P4.36-M), Alabang Town Center (P3.96-M), Greenbelt 3 (P3.87-M), Power Plant (P3.79-M) and Greenhills Promenade (P3.70-M).

Rounding out the top 20 theaters with impressive box office receipts are SM Aura (P3.63-M), Newport (P3.39-M), SM Southmall (P2.83-M), Shang Cineplex (P2.72-M), Robinsons Magnolia (P2.543-M), Gateway (P2.541-M), Eastwood (P2.53-M), Ayala Cebu (P2.46-M), SM Fairview (P2.34-M) and SM Marikina (P2.15-M).

Unlike the first film set in World War II, the sequel finds the now unfrozen Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America trying to adjust to his modern surroundings in the aftermath of the the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers.

Fighting side by side this time with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Johnson), Cap finds himself facing an enemy from within his supposed allies at S.H.I.E.L.D., including an old friend from his past.

Even as the film is set to open in the US on April 4, it has already earned an impressive 92 percent approval rating at film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Forbes.com calls it “flat-out fantastic” and ranks it “among the top three from Marvel and probably among the top two”. The UK-based The Guardian hails it as “an eye-popping Marvel spectacular”.

The highest compliment so far came from CinemaBlend.com, which compared “The Winter Soldier” to “Three Days of the Condor” which starred Robert Redford who now plays a high-ranking S.H.I.E.L.D. official in this film.

“With colorful heroes and spectacular action, the film is everything anyone could want from a comic book movie and will stand as one of the best of all time,” the site posted in its five-star review.

Kris ‘almost friends again’ with James

Kris Aquino is inviting James’ girlfriend to Bimby’s upcoming party (file)

Kris Aquino’s renewed ties with ex-husband James Yap has given the former couple a better opportunity to talk, if only for the welfare of their son, Bimby.

“Being friends with your ex shows you two are mature enough to get over the fact that you weren’t meant to be together,” Aquino posted on Instagram, Tuesday. She went on on to relate how Yap has offered to help financially with his son’s birthday celebration on April 19.

“Life continues to pleasantly surprise me,” she said. “James asked me yesterday what my plans for Bimb’s 7th birthday are & he offered to split the cost w/ me… I replied w/ the date & details & the cost. He replied by saying nalaglag sya sa upuan nya pero GO. I replied w/ hehehe okay lang whatever lang he was comfortable with. He said, okay lang para kay Bimb,”

She added, “I said THANK YOU & please invite your girlfriend to join the celebration…”

Aquino also recounted how she and Yap took turns watching over Yap Jr. while the latter was shooting for a TV commercial recently. “…I stayed until 6:30 PM & it was his turn until the shoot ended at 9 PM…”

The gesture, Aquino believes, is a sign that they are slowly rebuilding their friendship.

“We’re not yet there but we are almost friends again,” she quipped.

As to those wondering why she’s making these things public, Aquino explained, “I’m sharing this because it may help those in a similar situation.”

Aquino and Yap settled matters concerning the latter’s visitation rights, as well as the custody of their son, early this month. The trying situation lasted some four years.

“So maybe sometimes when we love our kids, we learn to forgive the failure of the marriage & we focus on succeeding as parents & being happy that we’ve all moved forward,” Aquino ended.

Anne refutes reported confrontation with Sam

annebisyosa

Anne Curtis (File)

Kapamilya actress Anne Curtis has denied a report that said she allegedly insulted her sister’s rumored boyfriend Sam Concepcion during the birthday celebration of “It’s Showtime” mainstay Vice Ganda at a bar in Makati.

On Tuesday, PEP reported that a supposedly drunk Curtis told Concepcion: “Why are you here? Who invited you? You are not classy enough to be here.”

Citing an unnamed “source” who “got the details from a party guest at the celebration,” the report added how Curtis also supposedly asked the “Mirabella” actor, “Ba’t mo niloloko ang kapatid ko?”

She was also said to have commented on the quality of Concepcion’s car, before the latter allegedly left the venue in a huff.

The “Dyesebel” lead star took to Instagram to address the issue, posting a photo of herself with Georgina Wilson and Vice Ganda, as well as Concepcion and other friends, captioning it: “Taken at Vice’s birthday. Of course I spoke to Sam that night and as always, I told him to take care of my baby sister. Like any ate would do BUT to clarify I DID NOT say any of those words written in the article.”

She added, “Kahit tanungin nyo pa si Sam. Even he doesn’t know where those words came from.”

She went on to insist that she and Sam are okay and that the alleged incident is a non-issue.

Curtis got involved in a similar controversy last year, reportedly slapping actor John Lloyd Cruz, JR Isaac and Leah de Guzman during an altercation in a bar. Curtis also addressed the incident via social media in her effort to apologize to fans.

Concepcion has yet to release a statement regarding the issue as of this writing.

Photographer wants big damages in Bieber lawsuit

biebs

Justin Bieber (AP)

MIAMI (AP) — A celebrity photographer sought to boost the potential damages he could win from Justin Bieber in a lawsuit that accuses the singer and a bodyguard of battery in a confrontation outside a recording studio.

The photographer’s attorney, Mark DiCowden, said at a Tuesday hearing that he has documented at least 11 similar alleged assaults against photographers over two years involving Bieber and his security personnel. DiCowden said a punitive damage award for Jeffrey Binion could deter future assaults against celebrity photographers, known as “paparazzi.”

“It’s not a financial fishing expedition,” DiCowden said in asking Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Sarah Zabel to allow him to pursue unspecified punitive damages. “It is well known around the world that Justin Bieber does not like to be photographed in public.”

Zabel did not immediately rule. Bieber attorney Jared Lopez said there is no evidence that Binion was physically harmed in the alleged attack in June — meaning compensatory damages for the photographer might be minimal — and no proof that Bieber himself told bodyguard Hugo Hesny to go after Binion.

“I don’t tell security how to do their job,” Bieber said in a March deposition in the case, according to Lopez.

Outside the courtroom, Bieber attorney Roy Black called the lawsuit “frivolous” and intended mainly to generate publicity. DiCowden denied that.

Hesny is facing a misdemeanor battery charge in the Binion case, and he was also recently charged in another photographer confrontation in Atlanta. Bieber is not facing criminal charges in either case. Other incidents involving Bieber bodyguards have occurred in Los Angeles, Hawaii, Argentina and England, according to court papers.

DiCowden also wants Zabel to order Bieber to return to Miami for another deposition to answer questions about his on-again, off-again girlfriend, singer and actress Selena Gomez. DiCowden claims he was improperly prevented from asking those questions during the March deposition and that they are important to the Florida case because she may have been present during previous photographer attacks.

Zabel is holding a hearing in June on that request.

Separately, Bieber has pleaded not guilty to DUI, resisting arrest and driving with an expired license after a Jan. 23 arrest in Miami Beach. A May 5 trial date is set in that case.

Rolling Stones (AP)

LONDON (AP) — The Rolling Stones are resuming a world tour after postponing several dates in the wake of the death of L’Wren Scott, girlfriend of singer Mick Jagger.

The band has announced new shows in Europe, starting May 26 in Oslo, Norway.

The Stones said Tuesday they also will play Portugal, Switzerland, Israel, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Sweden and Denmark as part of the 14 On Fire tour.

The band called off a seven-date tour of Australia and New Zealand after fashion designer Scott was found dead in her New York apartment on March 17. The New York City medical examiner’s office ruled her death a suicide.

Scott, 49, had been Jagger’s companion since 2001.

Kim Kardashian wades into Syria war debate

Kim

Kim Kardashian (AP)

BEIRUT (AP) — Kim Kardashian has waded into Syria’s conflict, calling on fans through Twitter to save the ancient Armenian Christian village of Kassab, whose residents fled as rebels seized control of the hamlet in late March.

She appeared to have bolstered false claims by loyalists of Syrian President Bashar Assad, who said Syrian rebels desecrated the village’s churches and slaughtered residents. She used the #SaveKessab hashtag that was used to spread the false claims, causing its popularity to explode.

“If you don’t know what’s going on in Kessab please google it … As an Armenian, I grew up hearing so many painful stories,” Kardashian wrote in a March 30 tweet, using an alternate spelling of the village’s name. “Please let’s not let history repeat itself!!!!!! Let’s get this trending!!!! #SaveKessab #ArmenianGenocide,” she wrote.

In doing so, the celebrity of Armenian descent underscored how Syria’s war, more than any other in history, has been waged on social media, with both supporters of President Bashar Assad and those opposing his rule using selectively chosen videos and photos, sometimes faked, recycled or altered, to support their grievances.

While wartime propaganda is as old as conflict itself, the Syrian conflict is a particularly unique case where all combatants heavily use social media, opening a window into a conflict that reporters can barely enter.

Kardashian’s use of the two hashtags side-by-side, “#SaveKessab” and “#ArmenianGenocide” also suggested she was also linking the flight of most of Kassab’s 2,000 residents to the deaths of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman forces in the early 20th century.

The event is widely viewed by scholars as the first genocide of the 20th century. Turkey, however, denies that the deaths constituted genocide, saying the toll has been inflated and that those killed were victims of civil war and unrest.

Kardashian’s publicist Ina Treciokas said Kardashian was “just voicing her support for Armenians” and said she had no additional comment.

Kassab’s residents fled after rebels seized their village on March 23, as part of a rebel offensive in the coastal Syrian province of Latakia, Assad’s ancestral heartland.

There are no credible reports that rebels killed any residents, or that they inflicted major damage on churches.

Kardashian appeared to have moved on since.

Her Kassab tweets were followed by a flurry of sultry selfies of her riding on a boat in a skimpy top and long skirt with hashtags like #WishYouWereHere and #WhatALife. She has been posting from Thailand in recent days, including one that shows her sitting at the entry of a temple featuring the Buddha.

Crowe meets Anglican leader after ‘Noah’ premiere

Russell Crowe (AP)

LONDON (AP) — The pope said no but the leader of the world’s Anglicans was happy to meet Russell Crowe, star of watery Biblical epic “Noah.”

Crowe was denied a private audience with Pope Francis when he was promoting the movie in Rome last month.

But Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby met the actor at the cleric’s Lambeth Palace home Tuesday, the day after the movie’s British premiere, to discuss faith and spirituality.

Director Darren Aronofsky’s film is a box-office hit in the U.S. but some Christian conservatives have complained it takes liberties with the Biblical account of the flood. It has been banned in much of the Muslim world because of its depiction of the prophet.

Welby’s office said the archbishop had seen “Noah” and found it “interesting and thought-provoking.”

Brown’s lawyer asks judge to block jail transfer

CB

Chris Brown (AP)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Chris Brown’s attorney has asked a judge to block an order that would transfer the jailed R&B singer to Washington, D.C., for his upcoming misdemeanor assault trial.

Brown is being held without bail and is due to go on trial on April 17 in Washington on the assault charge.

Last week, a judge in Washington authorized U.S. marshals to transport Brown from Los Angeles for the trial.

The Grammy-winning singer’s lawyer Mark Geragos filed a motion Tuesday asking a judge to block that order and instead release Brown to his custody just before the trial date.

His motion states that Brown would lose the ability to confer with Geragos and prepare for the trial if he is transferred by marshals.

A hearing has been scheduled for Thursday on the motion.

Brown and his bodyguard were arrested in Washington in October. Both are accused of punching a man.

At the time Brown was arrested, he was on probation in California for a 2009 attack on singer Rihanna, his then-girlfriend.

After his arrest in Washington, a California judge ordered Brown to receive anger management and other treatment. That judge jailed Brown earlier this month after he was dismissed from the treatment facility.

Famed Pinay choreographer cites gifted celeb dancers

georcelle

Georcelle Dapat-Sy

We see our favorite stars smiling like there’s nothing to it when they shake their moneymakers in front of the cameras, sometimes even being lifted by or thrown between backup dancers, and swished like human mops across the floor on variety shows and in concert.

Exhilarating? Yes, but also exhausting.

In an interview with Georcelle Dapat-Sy, the artistic director of G-Force and choreographer for TV shows “ASAP” and “Eat Bulaga,” the stars allot several days in a week to move like they do on stage, sometimes even learning dance steps for three numbers in one day. Top that with the stars’ schedule for their TV shows, movies, commitments in and out of town, pictorials, fitness regimen and, well, it’s all about dedication, determination, talent and a lot of towels for sweat.

Georcelle cited Sarah Geronimo, Anne Curtis, KC Concepcion, Enrique Gil, Iya Villania, Maja Salvador, Rayver Cruz and John Pratts as among the best celebrity dancers around.

“Sarah has the groove kasi singer siya. Lumalabas yung musicality niya, natural ang rhythm sa kanya. Si Anne naman, yung style of dancing niya ay sexy and naughty, talagang she gives the steps her own flavor. As for KC, may background siya sa dance kaya marunong siyang umintindi ng terms like pirouette and sashay,” the choreographer said.

Sarah Geronimo

Georcelle (right) with Sarah Geronimo

She lauded Iya Villaniya for incorporating acrobatics into her steps “parang Cirque de Soleil.” Maja, meanwhile, has a way of “owning” the stage when she busts a move. Enrique Gil looks “lasap” when he dances because he is “a natural dancer even if he doesn’t know it…and he is so determined to learn different styles and get the steps right”

The choreographer added that many celebrities book private dance sessions with her. They include Iza Calzado, Dr. Vicky Belo and designer Rajo Laurel who’ve all attended her sensual dance workshops or what she calls the “#WhiteShirtLove” set. The stars undergo this at their own time to fit their busy schedules, but even regular folks can join a group class under them.

“They wear white shirt and whatever bottom they want because we want them to be really comfortable with their movements inside the classroom. The attire also shows what areas of improvement in their bodies they can improve. Para din kita how these shape up as we go along,” Georcelle said to that effect.

Several workshops are open to men. In fact, many of the celebrities the choreographer works with are hunks. Aside from Enrique and John, athlete-turned-actor Sam Milby goes to Georcelle for his dance numbers focusing on moves that show “form.”

Other stars whom Georcelle enjoys working with are Gary Valenciano, Vina Morales and Rachel Alejandro.

G-Force’s series of summer dance workshops dubbed G-Force Project is being offered at their dance studio in Quezon City up to May 29, 2014. Aside from “#WhiteShirtLove,” they offer K-Pop, Burlesque, Hip-Hop, 2-Werk, Kid’s Class, among others. The classes are taught by Georcelle herseld and her homegrown choreographers. Recital will be on May 29, 2014 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Georcelle advises people who want to become good dancers to invest time in learning the basics.

“These days, there’s no such thing as dalawang kanang paa when dancing. Anyone can learn dance.”
