LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Pop sensation Lorde is pulling together the music for the next installment of “The Hunger Games,” due out in November, the film’s producer Lionsgate announced Thursday.

The 17-year-old New Zealander — who dominated the charts in 2013 with “Royals” — is “hand-picking” the artists who’ll feature in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1,” it said.

She’ll also supply the movie’s first single — which, she disclosed on her Twitter account, she’s already penned with songwriting partner Joel Little.

“i am so pleased and proud to have been announced the sole curator of the soundtrack for MOCKINGJAY – PART 1,” she told her 1.94 million followers.

A global phenomenon when it first hit movie theaters in 2012, “The Hunger Games” stars Jennifer Lawrence as the bow-wielding survivor of a bloody reality TV contest in a dystopian future.

Picking Lorde to “curate” the soundtrack of its third installment dovetails with the franchise’s core demographic — teenagers and young adults.

“I sat down with Lorde on the set of ‘Mockingjay’ this spring and I was immediately struck by how she so innately understood what we, as both fans and filmmakers, were trying to accomplish with the film,” said director Francis Lawrence.

“I can’t wait to share what she’s done with the fans — it is truly remarkable.”

Paramount apologises after Ninja Turtles poster recalls 9/11

SYDNEY (AFP) – Paramount Pictures apologised Thursday after publishing a poster of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film that showed the characters jumping from a burning building, with its Australian release date — September 11 — printed at the bottom.

The American movie studio deleted images of the poster, which it had placed on Australian Twitter and Facebook accounts this week, after it was slammed by users of the social media sites.

“We are deeply sorry to have used that artwork for the marketing materials promoting the September 11 opening in Australia,” Paramount Australia said in a statement.

“Combining that image and date was a mistake. We intended no offence and have taken immediate action to discontinue its use.”

The World Trade Center Twin Towers collapsed during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York.

Almost 3,000 people were killed in the Al-Qaeda atrocity, with dozens jumping to their deaths from the skyscrapers to escape the flames.

The film version of the 1980s comic book heroes — who are based in New York City — will be released in the United States on August 8.

Twitter users expressed shock at the design of the poster.

“I wonder why no one at the design phase thought this poster art direction was a bad idea,” said one Twitter user, while another asked: “Is this really for real? What were they thinking?”

The apology was not posted on Paramount Australia’s Twitter and Facebook pages.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Australian pop rock group 5 Seconds of Summer scored one of the year’s biggest debuts on the weekly Billboard 200 chart on Wednesday, cementing its status as the latest boy band to conquer the United States.

5 Seconds of Summer’s debut self-titled album sold 259,000 copies in its first week, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan. It became the third most-streamed album on music platform Spotify, with more than 4.4 million streams last week according to the platform.

For 2014, the album’s first-week sales trailed only Coldplay’s “Ghost Stories,” which debuted with 383,000 copies in May and Eric Church’s “The Outsiders,” which opened with 288,000 in February.

5 Seconds of Summer, formed by Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin and Michael Clifford, built a following as an opening act for British boy band One Direction over the past year. This year, its popularity grew with the single “She’s So Perfect,” which is on the debut album.

Disney’s “Frozen” climbed three spots to No. 2 with sales of 37,000 in its 35th week on the chart, while last week’s chart-topper, parody singer “Weird Al” Yankovich’s “Mandatory Fun,” dropped to No. 3 this week, selling 33,000 copies.

Only two other new entries made the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart this week. Rapper Common’s “Nobody’s Smiling” came in at No. 6 and metal band Crown the Empire clocked in at No. 7 with “The Resistance: Rise of the Runaways.”

For the week ending July 27, overall album sales totaled 4.3 million units, down 9 percent from the comparable week in 2013, Billboard said. So far this year, album sales have reached 137.8 million, down 15 percent from a year earlier.

At Skywalker Ranch, the ‘Force’ of George Lucas is everywhere

George Lucas. (AFP)

NICASIO, California | George Lucas, the man behind the mega-successful interplanetary saga “Star Wars,” may well have retired, but his spirit looms large at the famous Skywalker Ranch.

The creator of Luke, Leia, Indiana Jones and Darth Vader bought the property in 1978 with proceeds from his first blockbuster hit, “Star Wars”, to realize his dream of creating a haven for filmmaking outside Hollywood, at a cost of around $100 million, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Rare visitors allowed into the huge complex — 1,900 hectares near San Francisco — must first weave around hills, orchards, and pastures occupied by cows and deer.

Within its boundaries, there are several screening rooms, vineyards, an underground pool and even a small inn for clients and friends.

“The ranch has its own police so do not get away from the group; they are not very flexible,” warned a spokesman during a recent media visit.

Beside an artificial pond dubbed “Lake Ewok” lies the “technical” building that houses the studios of Skywalker Sound, specializing in special effect sounds for science fiction and fantasy films — those by Lucas but also for outside clients, recently including “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Working there are several longtime collaborators of Lucas, who refer constantly to the ideas and spirit of their revered mentor.

“George always said that music is half of the movie experience,” said Matthew Wood, a Skywalker Sound employee.

On the other side of the pond, the massive white, slate-roofed main house boasts a research library with 21,000 volumes as well as the former office of the owner, now 71, who hardly comes in these days.

Lucas “is retired. He got married and just had a baby,” a spokesman said, referring to his daughter Everest who was born last year.

“He is working on his narrative art museum project in Chicago,”the spokesman added.

PRESERVING THE MAGIC

The building — decorated with film mementos, like Indiana Jones’s bullwhip, and with pieces from Lucas’s art collection, including several canvasses by Norman Rockwell — has the air of a museum.

The filmmaker sold his company and the rights to his space opera to Disney in 2012 for $4 billion, one of the biggest ever such deals.

The media empire aims now to make good on its investment.

Three new feature-length films are planned, with “Episode VII” currently filming in London, and the animated film “Star Wars: Rebels” debuting on the Disney XD channel in 46 countries in October.

In downtown San Francisco, at the Lucasfilm headquarters, Lucas’s former colleagues have gone back to work expanding the Star Wars universe while preserving its appeal for millions of fans.

With “Star Wars: Rebels,” pitched at children between age six and 12, Disney and Lucasfilm also hope to suck in a new generation to the world of the Jedi and “the Force.”

The TV series “represents this new era” beyond Luke and Leia, said executive producer Dave Filoni in the studio offices, decorated with a collection of hundreds of posters of Lucas’s films, statues of Darth Vader, spaceships and monsters.

“Star Wars: Rebels” features five fugitive rebels who live in their spaceship and who, obviously, battle the nefarious Empire.

“George always said that you cannot rely on the Star Wars lure of ships and light sabers. You need the family to work as a story,” explained Filoni, wearing his ever-present black cowboy hat.

But for fans worried about the Star Wars universe post-Lucas, Filoni promised nothing big is changing.

“Disney shows great respect for the franchise. They know that we’re the ones who know it best.”

‘Sharknado 2′ creates feeding frenzy on Twitter, record audience for Syfy

Ian Ziering battles a giant shark on subway in 'Sharknado 2'.

LOS ANGELES | Flying sharks chomping through New York City drew a record audience for Syfy’s “Sharknado 2: The Second One,” and became the most tweeted-about TV movie on social media, the U.S. cable network said on Thursday.

“Sharknado 2,” which aired on Wednesday and reunited leading stars Tara Reid and Ian Ziering from last year’s campy hit “Sharknado,” drew 3.9 million viewers to become Syfy’s most-watched original movie.

The network added that the film also attracted 1.6 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic that advertisers covet.

On Twitter, Syfy, a unit of Comcast Corp’s NBCUniversal, said “Sharknado 2″ garnered 1 billion impressions across conversations on the micro-blogging site, and was also among the top trending topics of Wednesday evening.

In the movie, an aerial shark attack causes large-scale destruction across Manhattan. It features numerous cameos including “Today” show hosts Matt Lauer and Al Roker and country music singer Billy Ray Cyrus.

Last year’s “Sharknado” became a surprise hit for U.S. cable channel Syfy after attracting a cult audience drawn to the film’s low-budget special effects about a hurricane that unleashes hungry sharks on Los Angeles.

The popularity of “Sharknado,” which drew an audience of 1.4 million with its July TV premiere last year, created a social media frenzy that drew larger audiences to rebroadcasts of the film, and led the network to release “Sharknado” in 200 U.S. movie theaters.

Syfy is continuing the shark attacks with “Sharknado 3,” due out in summer 2015.

Paris porno cinema makes lone stand against the Web

Maurice Laroche, owner of Le Beverley adult cinema, poses inside the projection room at his cinema in Paris July 30, 2014. (Reuters)

PARIS | In a shabby cinema tucked away in a backstreet of central Paris, a crowd of aging devotees are putting up quiet resistance to the might of on-line pornography.

Faced with the onslaught of the Web and its thousands of sex sites catering to every taste, “Le Beverley” bills itself as the last registered porn-only cinema in Paris still serving a diet of retro classics to a loyal clientele.

Its program of 35mm films from the 1970s, along with more modern offerings, attracts 700 customers a week, many of them regulars.

Owner Maurice Laroche has run the theater for 30 years and remembers the heyday of sex cinemas, when Paris’s Grands Boulevards area was full of competitors.

But with the Internet and on-demand pornography, Laroche has seen numbers plummet with 1,000 fewer customers passing through the poster-lined hall every week than they did 15 years ago.

“There are clients that I’ve known since I came here, about 30 years ago. We’ve followed their working life, they’ve retired and since we’re all about the same age they worry whether Le Beverley, as it’s the last – barely profitable – cinema, is going to disappear or not,” he said.

The City of Love’s numerous sex shops are no substitute, Laroche says, for the sense of community in the cinema where many customers have built up friendships over the years.

“Those clients meet others in the cinema who they’ve known for some time, and who they’ve got along with. Quite a few meet up at midday for a little lunch before heading to Le Beverley to let the food go down,” he said.

Some 700, almost exclusively male, customers return weekly and Laroche puts the average age at about 60.

He started his career in mainstream cinemas and remembers showing cult classics such as “A Clockwork Orange”, the 1971 Stanley Kubrick adaptation of the Anthony Burgess novella.

Though he said he had only seen two or three pornographic films in his life, he moved to Le Beverley for a career change and bought it from the former owner in 1992.

The films are shown on a loop and its 120-seater cinema is at its busiest around three o’clock in the afternoon. Laroche says the aging clientele have little desire to brave the Paris metro system late into the night.

One of its little blue paper tickets costs 12 euros ($16), a bargain as far as Laroche is concerned as the price has remained untouched by inflation for six years.

The film reels are delivered once a fortnight by his supplier, of whom he is now the only customer.

He sees no future for his business once he retires, but for the moment at least the thought of his loyal fanbase stops him from closing the doors for the final time.

“I came here by chance and I don’t regret it,” he said. “I’ve got great customers – not many of them anymore, but they’re high quality.”
