Actor Mark Gil had been diagnosed with liver cancer as early as two years ago but wished to keep it a secret, according to the official statement released by the Eigenmann family Monday afternoon.
The actor, born Raphael Joseph de Mesa Eigenmann and better known by his nickname Ralph to friends and colleagues, passed away at 8AM on Monday. He was 52.
Following is his family’s statement:
“We, the Eigenmann Family, would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to everybody who has shown their concern for Ralph these past few weeks.
“It is with much sorrow that we announce that he passed away this morning at exactly 8am. He died peacefully in his sleep in the arms of his wife, Maricar, and surrounded by family.
“Ralph was first diagnosed with liver cancer two years ago, but it was only in June of this year that he found out that it was terminal. It was Ralph’s request that this should not be revealed, and we did not question his decision.
“To those who have asked us about his condition, especially his colleagues, the press and fans, we apologize for not being forthright, but we also ask for understanding.
“We would, however, like everyone to know that he spent his last days in comfort and in no pain. In fact, he was in good spirits and humor, and enjoying the presence of his entire family. Even then, he was still bringing us together, as he always has, and we are now all complete.
“Until the very end, he was a warrior. Ralph faced death with courage and grace, while still bringing laughter to the room. That was his gift: the ability to make those around him better.
“Ralph had told us that he only wanted to spend and cherish the remaining precious days of his life in the company of his family and closest friends. He also wished that we be allowed to grieve his passing in private.
“We all request that the public please respect his wish and allow us to mourn his passing accordingly.
“Please allow us this time as well to remember Ralph: husband, son, brother, father and grandfather.
“For the outpouring of love for Ralph that we’ve received on his behalf, we thank you. It is deeply appreciated.
“For those who’ve known and loved him throughout his career in cinema, and television, we will hold a celebration of his life and work. We will announce the details at a later time. But for now we would like to assure everyone that as long as Filipino films are being watched and appreciated, there will always be Mark Gil.
“To quote a line from Batch ’81, one of the many movies he made his own, and characteristic of Ralph himself:
“‘Sa simula’t katapusan ay kapatiran.’”

Actress Jenny McCarthy and pop star turned reality television star Donnie Wahlberg have tied the knot in Chicago, family and media said on Sunday.
McCarthy, a former co-host of the daytime talk show, “The View,” and Wahlberg, part of 1980s boy band New Kids on the Block, held their ceremony in the Chicago suburb of St. Charles, WGN-TV said.
The couple announced their engagement in April, with plans to wed Labor Day weekend in New York City.
Donnie’s brother, actor Mark Wahlberg, was not at the ceremony, but posted a message and video on photo sharing site Instagram saying he and his family “wish we could be there.” “Congratulations from all of us,” it said.
Donnie and Mark Wahlberg currently co-star on a reality television show called “Wahlburgers” that focuses on brother Paul’s Massachusetts restaurant.

SYDNEY | Pop diva Miley Cyrus has opened up to Australian television about her life, saying Googling yourself is bad for your brain and Elvis was a “twerker”.
Speaking ahead of her Australian tour the former squeaky clean child star of Hannah Montana also spoke about why she has posted images of herself smoking marijuana on social media.
“I put pictures of me smoking weed, I’m not going to lie, on my Instagram because I was brought up in the way that we never thought marijuana was bad,” she told Channel Seven on Sunday evening.
“I don’t promote it in my songs… it’s not like I’m sitting around telling a bunch of kids to do a bunch of drugs.”
Pressed on the topic, the 21-year-old, who has “love your brain”, tattooed on her body replied: “You know what hurts your brain? Googling yourself.
“You know what hurts your brain? Instagram. You know what hurts your brain? Sitting there reading comments on Facebook.
“I have a 14-year-old sister and I go through her comments and people are calling her a slut and that’s a 14-year-old. So I think that’s hurting your brain,” she said.
Cyrus also commented on her now infamous twerking performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards with Robin Thicke, comparing her suggestive moves to those of Elvis Presley.
“No one talked about him (Thicke) or what he was doing, it was all my fault. It’s funny, I just never thought anything about it. Literally, I never thought ‘Oh this is like a married dude that I’m dancing with this way’,” she said.
“Elvis, he wasn’t wearing the outfits I was wearing… I mean no one wants to admit it that Elvis was twerking. He was.”

LOS ANGELES | Nude photos purportedly showing many top stars, including Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence and pop star Rihanna, bounced around social media Sunday, in an apparent massive hacking leak, US media reported.
“It’s so weird and hard how people take your privacy away from you,” Lawrence said in a tweet.
The actress’ agent, meanwhile, vowed to take legal action.
“This is a flagrant violation of privacy. The authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence,” her representative told TMZ entertainment website.
Word of the images began spreading early Sunday, amid reports that the photos had been obtained by hacking iCloud accounts, Mashable and other media reported.
Among the celebrities whose pictures allegedly were stolen and posted online were Avril Lavigne, Amber Heard, Gabrielle Union, Hayden Panettiere and Hope Solo, according to Mashable.
Media reports said among the other starlets targeted were Hillary Duff, Jenny McCarthy, Kaley Cuoco, Kate Upton, Kate Bosworth, Keke Palmer and Kim Kardashian.
Former Nickelodeon star and singer Victoria Justice said the images claiming to show her unclothed body were anything but the real deal.
“These so called nudes of me are FAKE people. Let me nip this in the bud right now. *pun intended*” she tweeted.
A spokesperson for actress and pop star Ariana Grande told BuzzFeed that images said to be of her, are “completely fake.”
But horror movie actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead, whose intimate photos were leaked, acknowledged her frustration.
“To those of you looking at photos I took with my husband years ago in the privacy of our home, hope you feel great about yourselves,” she tweeted.
“Knowing those photos were deleted long ago, I can only imagine the creepy effort that went into this. Feeling for everyone who got hacked.”
