(Reuters) – A tour bus carrying the lead singer of country music group Lady Antebellum caught fire on Thursday on a highway near Dallas but no one was injured.

Local police in the Dallas suburb of Garland said the incident occurred on Interstate 30.

Vocalist Hillary Scott posted on Twitter that she, her husband and tour manager were traveling to Dallas when one of the rear tires blew out. The driver quickly pulled over before the fire spread in the vehicle, Scott said.

“Our bus tire caught on fire and we had to evacuate very quickly,” Scott wrote. “Everyone is safe and sound.”

The other two members of the group were not aboard the bus.

Lady Antebellum is nominated for vocal group of the year at the 50th annual Academy of Country Music Awards to be held on Sunday in Arlington, Texas.

Han Solo revs up ‘Star Wars’ fans in new ‘Force Awakens’ trailer

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Reuters) – “Chewie, we’re home.”

So declares Harrison Ford’s Han Solo in a new trailer released on Thursday for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the much anticipated return of one the most celebrated movie franchises of all time.

The trailer was the highlight of the annual “Star Wars Celebration” fan convention, where thousands of fansflocked to see old and new cast members discuss the movie set for release on Dec 18.

Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and Anthony Daniels(C-3PO) joined Oscar Isaac, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, the lead actors of “The Force Awakens,” director J.J. Abrams and producer Kathleen Kennedy to answer questions.

Ford, who first played Han Solo in the original 1977 movie, was unable to attend after being injured when he crash-landed a small plane on a golf course last month. Abrams said the actor was well and resting.

The first look at Ford in the new film prompted wild cheers in the convention hall from fans dressed in costume and wielding glowing lightsabers.

The new trailer opens with a vehicle racing along a desert-like planet called Jakku, as Luke Skywalker’s voice says, “The Force is strong with my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You have it too.”

Other glimpses in the roughly 90-second clip show Isaac’s Poe Dameron in his X-wing, John Boyega’s Finn in a Stormtrooper suit, Daisy Ridley’s Rey running from a big explosion and new droid BB-8.

It concludes with Han Solo donning a leather jacket and standing next to Chewbacca.

“The Force Awakens,” produced by Walt Disney Co, picks up 30 years after “Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.”

Isaac, Ridley and Boyega revealed tidbits about their characters in a film that has been shrouded in secrecy.

Rey is a “very self-sufficient and solitary” scavenger in a ship graveyard, Ridley said.

Boyega’s character Finn has confused fans about whether he’s a villain or a hero. Boyega nodded when asked if he was a Stormtrooper, a soldier of the dark side.

“We find Finn in incredible danger and the way in which he decides to react to the danger changes his life,” Boyega said.

Poe Dameron was “sent on a mission by a certain princess and he ends up coming across Finn, and their fates are forever intertwined,” he said. (Reporting by Piya Sinha-Roy; Editing by Ted Botha)

SM Entertainment apologizes for Kangin, denies Tao leaving EXO

SM Entertainment has apologized for Super Junior member Kangin’s failure to attend the required reserve force training while it denied that EXO member Tao is leaving the boy band.

Kangin, who performed with Super Junior in the country last April 12, was investigated by the police for not showing up on his training.

He was discharged from the Korean army in 2012 but it turned out that discharged soldiers are mandated to continue training for eight years.

“Due to Kangin′s schedules and personal issues, there was negligence. We will make sure this never happens again,” said SM Entertainment as quoted by EnewsWorld and Newsen.

The report said Kangin was given three chances to complete his 72 hours of training in the last two years but failed, prompting the police to investigate him.

On the other hand, SM Entertainment has denied a report that Tao is leaving EXO.

A Chinese news outlet earlier reported that the Chinese member is leaving the band.

“The rumors of Tao leaving the group are unfounded,” SM Entertainment told Enews.

Tao has been recovering from injury and has not been visible in EXO promotions, events that fueled rumors that he was quitting.

“There’s no such thing. It′s groundless,” the agency said.

Tribute song for Paul Walker hits No. 1 on Billboard chart

ATLANTA (AP) — Paul Walker is not only being remembered onscreen, but in music too: The tribute song for him, “See You Again,” hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart Thursday.

The song from rapper Wiz Khalifa and budding singer Charlie Puth is from the soundtrack for “Furious 7,” the latest installment in the “Fast & Furious” film series that featured Walker.

Puth, 23, sings the emotional hook on the song. As he wrote “See You Again,” the singer thought about a friend who died around the same time as Walker. From there, the words came easily.

“It really hit home for me when my friend died in a very similar situation,” Puth said in an interview Wednesday. “Paul Walker’s incident was devastating, so I thought about Paul and my friend. I sat down at the piano, played those chords and those words just fell out of me.”

It took Puth about 10 minutes to write the hook of the song paying homage to Walker, who was killed in a car crash in 2013. Puth and Khalifa beat out a number of artists who submitted their lyrics and vocals for a Walker tribute song.

“It just felt right,” Puth said.

“See You Again” already set two Spotify records: It has earned the most streams in a day and week with 4.2 million and 21.9 million listens, respectively. And on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it supplanted Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson’s 14-week run at the top spot with “Uptown Funk.”

“I didn’t think it was going to happen,” said Puth. “I’m still surprised because ‘Uptown Funk’ is such a brilliant record … so for our song to take its place, it’s major.”

“See You Again,” which has sold 721,193 digital tracks so far, helped the “Furious 7″ soundtrack debut at No. 1 on Billboard’s 200 albums chart this week. The film has become a box office winner, earning $252 million so far.

Days ago, “Furious 7″ star Vin Diesel sang a snippet of the song in memory of Walker at the MTV Movie Awards.

Grammy-nominated Khalifa, whose hits include “Black and Yellow” and “Young, Wild & Free,” said he wanted to celebrate life and family instead of being sad on “See You Again.”

“It’s such a meaningful song, so I tried to put all those things together,” Khalifa said in an interview Wednesday. “Charlie’s vocals are amazing, so it all came together and made sense.”

Puth released his debut single, the Meghan Trainor-featured “Marvin Gaye,” earlier this year. The New Jersey native, who was once signed to Ellen DeGeneres’ record label, has been busy writing for other acts, including Trey Songz’s latest R&B hit, “Slow Motion.”

Puth said the attention he’s received following the success of “See You Again” has become “surreal.” The singer said he cried after he got the news of the song topping the charts.

“I just walked outside, looked up at the sky and said, ‘Thank you to Paul and my friend,’” Puth said. “My friend always used to say I would have a No. 1 hit. So right now, I’m just taking it all in.”

Ai Ai turns emotional over Kapuso return

Singer-actress Ai Ai delas Alas couldn’t help but shed tears just before signing on April 16 an exclusive two-year contract with GMA-7, which built up her name at the start of her career.

Note that Ai Ai was with another network for more than a decade before finally deciding to transfer—“come home,” as she put it.

“I have returned,” she said in tears. “Naiyak ako kasi naalala ko nu’ng bumalik sa akin ang nanay (biological mom) ko. Nahihiya siya na sumama sa akin nun dahil baka (daw) sabihin porke artista na ako ay pupunta na siya sa akin.

Present during the contract signing were GMA Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon; GMA President and COO Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr.; GMA Entertainment TV's Senior Vice President Lilybeth G. Rasonable; GMA Vice President for Drama Productions Redgie Acuña-Magno.

Present during the contract signing were GMA Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon; GMA President and COO Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr.; GMA Entertainment TV’s Senior Vice President Lilybeth G. Rasonable; GMA Vice President for Drama Productions Redgie Acuña-Magno.

“Noong makuha ko siya ay may Alzheimer na siya, nakalimutan na niya ako. Kahit na ano (pang) gusto kong ibigay sa kanya na makakapagpasaya sa kanya, nakalimutan na niya ako.

“Ang GMA Kapuso, hindi ako nakalimutan…babalik na ako sa totoo kong bahay.”

The top GMA-7 execs in attendance during the signing expressed elation over Ai Ai’s return. They even had a red carpet rolled out in the lobby of the GMA-7 building, perhaps, in salute to Ai Ai being widely regarded in the business as royalty, the “Comedy Queen.”

They talked about the many projects they’ve lined up for her, including shows with big Kapuso stars like Ryzza Mae Dizon and Vic Sotto; and a movie. She hopes to work with Marian Rivera and Dennis Trillo, too.

When Ai Ai set foot on GMA-7 to accompany her son, fellow Kapuso artist Sancho for taping of a show, she admitted getting nostalgic.

“Sinundan ko siya (dito sa GMA),” she said. “Sabi ko (kay Sancho), ‘Dito kami dati, sa ‘R.S.V.P.’ Ang saya lang ng feeling.”

“R.S.V.P.” was Ai Ai’s first-ever regular TV program on which she became known for playing the character Cheenie La Chika. The show aired from 1991 to 1994 on GMA.

Other shows the actress hosted for GMA-7 back then were “Salo-Salo Together (SST)” and “Lunch Date.”

Ai Ai’s return to GMA-7 followed weeks of talks on whether or not she will sign up with the network. Now, the rest is history.

Not about Kris

The comedy actress clarified that TV host-actress Kris Aquino had nothing to do with her transfer to GMA-7. Recall that the two weren’t on speaking terms for quite a time over an incident that somewhat soured their relationship, until they bumped into each other at the Marian Rivera-Dingdong Dantes wedding last year.

“’Di ba’t nagkabati na kami…? ‘Yun na ‘yon. Nagkabati na kami,” Ai Ai said.

Their friendship, Ai Ai said, is a bit different now, though, because “hindi na kami roommates, magkapit-bahay na lang kami kasi nandito na ako. I wish her well.”

Asked if she still considers Kris a friend, she paused for a bit before lightly saying, “Siguro ano na lang, (she’s) a former friend and a former roommate.”

Presence on social media

Prior to her GMA comeback, Ai Ai announced she will become active on social media anew.

Recall that she closed her Instagram account last December, maintaining that she’d rather do away with it than be continuously bullied by online bashers.

Ai Ai opened a new Instagram account following her botched pre-Valentine show.

“Naisip ko…bakit ako nagbura (ng IG account)? Emosyonal ako, eh. Unang-una, lumang tao ako, hindi ako sanay na sinisiraan ng kahit na sino….” she said. “(Pero) na-realize ko na… Bakit ako nagpatalo? Unang-una hindi ko naman kilala ang mga ito (bashers).”

One of her most recent messages on Instagram read: “God will never leave you empty. He will replace everything you lost. If He asks you to put something down, it’s because He wants you to pick up something greater.” (With a report from Alex V. Brosas)

Jia, Sorrentino, Van Sant in Cannes lineup; selfies a no-no

LONDON (AP) — The 68th Cannes Film Festival will feature a lesbian love story starring Cate Blanchett, a Shakespearean tragedy with Michael Fassbender and films from cinema heavyweights including China’s Jia Zhangke, Italy’s Paolo Sorrentino and the United States’ Gus Van Sant.

It won’t feature a lot of selfies, if organizers have their way.

While stars including Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman, Rachel Weisz and Benicio del Toro will be welcomed on the red carpet at the French Riviera extravaganza, selfies and selfie sticks most definitely won’t.

Announcing the festival lineup Thursday, Cannes director Thierry Fremaux called selfies “ridiculous and grotesque.”

“We’re not going to ban selfies. We don’t have police powers,” Fremaux said. But he strongly urged festivalgoers to keep the red carpet a selfie-free zone.

Fremaux announced 17 films that will be competing for prizes at the May 13-24 festival, chosen from more than 1,800 submissions. They include Jia’s “Mountains May Depart,” Sorrentino’s “Youth” — a film about age starring Michael Caine — and Van Sant’s forest feature “The Sea of Trees,” starring Matthew McConaughey.

Returning Cannes veterans include “Gomorrah” director Matteo Garrone, with “The Tale of Tales,” starring John C. Reilly and Salma Hayek; South Korea’s Kore-eda Hirokazu with sibling saga “Our Little Sister”; and France’s Jacques Audiard with “Dheepan,” the story of a Tamil refugee in France.

Fassbender and Marion Cotillard star in a film version of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” by Australian director Justin Kurzel.

Also in the lineup are films by Italy’s Nanni Moretti, Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien and American Todd Haynes, whose entry “Carol” is a 1950s-set love story between two women starring Blanchett and Rooney Mara.

Cannes organizers have faced criticism for not selecting more films by female directors. For the first time in more than 25 years, this year’s festival will open with a film by a woman, French director Emmanuelle Bercot’s drama “La Tete Haute.”

Two more female filmmakers are in competition: Valerie Donzelli with “Marguerite and Julien” and Maiwenn with “Mon Roi” (“My King”). Both directors are French.

Geographically, the entries range from Europe to China, South Korea, the U.S. and Mexico, setting of Denis Villeneuve’s narco-crime drama “Sicario.”

Genres range from drama to martial-arts thriller to science fiction rom-com — in the form of “The Lobster,” a film by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos starring Weisz and Colin Farrell that Fremaux called incomprehensible, in a good way.

Fremaux said several more films will be added to the competition before the festival opens. He announced a further 14 movies running in Cannes’ second competition for up-and-coming filmmakers, “Un Certain Regard.”

Films in the lineup but not competing for prizes include Woody Allen’s campus comedy “Irrational Man,” starring Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix; George Miller’s dystopian thriller “Mad Max: Fury Road”; and Asif Kapadia’s documentary about the late singer Amy Winehouse, “Amy.”

Pixar, whose buoyant “Up” opened the festival in 2009, returns with “Inside Out,” in which an adolescent girl’s thoughts and emotions become animated characters.

Actress Portman makes her feature-film directorial debut with “A Tale of Love and Darkness,” based on a memoir by Israeli writer Amos Oz.

Winners of the Palme d’Or and other prizes will be chosen by a jury led by directors Joel and Ethan Coen.
