REVIEW | Ke$ha partied to the max in recent Manila concert

Ke$ha performs for her Manila fans.

Given how Ke$ha’s concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum went down last October 24, it’s actually quite understandable why the Malaysian government forced organizers to cancel the succeeding Kuala Lumpur leg of her ongoing “Warrior” tour.

The controversial dance pop diva’s show was indeed likely to offend ultra-conservative sensibilities as she delivered a spirited performance in an explosive, unapologetic show characterized by among other things colorful risqué costumes, an inflatable pig and a pair of women’s legs, a toy car she herself “drove” onstage, glittering confetti and a rather generous sprinkling of “F” word spiels.

There was even a dancer dressed in what looked like a giant penis costume strutting onstage midway through her set. True to her image, Ke$ha ended her show on a characteristically racy tone with the quip, “Goodbye, Manila! I hope you all get laid tonight!”

But take away all of the controversial stuff and the show was actually a lot of fun, especially for the less prude and for her more open-minded fans. It was certainly far more entertaining than Rihanna’s lackluster return gig at the Mall of Asia Arena which only showed some semblance of life during its last 30 minutes.

At least Ke$ha put on an elaborate show punctuated by precision choreography, surprisingly rocking arrangements and guitar hero solos and, of course, Ke$ha herself in her best element.

The short and sweet 15-song set included all her nine big hits like “Tik Tok”, “Your Love Is My Drug”, “Blah Blah Blah”, “Take It Off”, “We R Who We R”, “Blow” and her latest singles “C’mon” and “Crazy Kids”. She also included equally interesting tracks like “Warrior”, “Party at a Rich Dude’s House”, “Dirty Love”, “Animal” and “Supernatural”.

Of course, she ended her concert with her encore number, “Die Young”, her most controversial song to date. With lyrics by Nate Ruess of the alternative rock group fun, the song was supposedly about living life to the fullest but was interpreted by others to be about premature death.

While Ke$ha is not exactly in the same league as Lady Gaga (at least not yet), she is truly a formidable headlining act to reckon with. Her Manila show, presented by PLDT HOME Fibr, is easily one of the year’s most memorable concerts. We’re not too sure how she would have managed to tone it down for her Kuala Lumpur show, which would have also featured our very own Krista K as her opening act. Because that gig was cancelled at the eleventh hour, we’ll never really know.

Too bad. Taken with a grain of salt, there was a lot of fun to be had in this concert. Her Malaysian fans would have found Ke$ha’s show to be quite a hoot and truly the party that she promised it to be.

Alex Gonzaga: Single and sassy

Alex Gonzaga, Manila Bulletin

Alex Gonzaga

One person I miss in TV5 is Alex Gonzaga (wala naman pong halong pagnanasa!). She is one of my favorite co-hosts (huwag lang magtatampo si Valeen Montenegro ha!). I am just happy that she is doing well in ABS-CBN and she never forgets her friends in the Kapatid Network (sabunutan ko siya ’pag kinalimutan niya ’ko!).

Just recently, while having dinner in a Makati restaurant with some TV5 friends, headed by our guardian angel Noel Ferrer and TV5 boss Perci Intalan (fresh from his New York wedding with Jun Lana), we found out that Alex was in the area with her family. We immediately invited her to join us. She graciously said yes (gracious ba siya?!). As expected, she “entertained” us with her usual bubbly self!

I asked her: “Sino nami-miss mo sa amin?” Hahaha. ’Yung tawanan namin, nakaka-miss. Tsaka parang nami-miss ko si Mo (Twister)! Nakapag move-on na kaya siya kina (bleep) at (bleep)?!” (’Wag na i-mention kung sino, ayaw namin maka-away si Mo! Afraid!).

Alex just finished a remarkable hosting stint with her sister Toni on “The Voice of the Philippines,” where she candidly teased Toni in one episode as the “Bangs of the Philippines” (remember the phenomenal bangs na nag-trend sa Twitter?!). That is how close she is to her sister. She jokes with her on and off camera like “BFFs” do. Actually, Alex is a natural comedienne and can throw hilarious punch lines as well. But she says, “Ganito naman talaga ako. Pero syempre nag-iingat na rin ako sa mga biro ko. Minsan na ’ko napahamak, ’di ba? So ingat lang din.”

She also doesn’t mind working with her elder sister. Only, she sees one problem with it: “Hindi na ’ko basta-basta pwede magsuot ng damit na nasuot na niya. Mahahalata. Actually, nagawa ko isang beses! Ang daming nakapansin! Nabuking!”

The former TV5 princess is currently busy with the gag show “Banana Nite” with Angelica Panganiban, John Prats and Jason Gainza, among others, where she gets to show her natural funny side. But asked if she misses hosting talk shows (she was one of the pioneers of the now defunct show, “Juicy” on TV5), she says, “Hindi naman. Para iba naman. ’Tsaka ang sarap ng feeling na ako ngayon ’yung walang alam na tsismis. Ako ngayon nagtatanong. ’Pag ako tinanong mo ng tsismis, wala talaga akong alam!”

Alex is very much single but she admits that she is entertaining a Chinese businessman suitor.

“Simula nu’ng nagka-boyfriend ako ng Chinese, naging malapit na ’ko sa Chinese. Pero ngayon, nag-e-entertain pa lang talaga ako,” Alex explains (ikaw na ang entertainer of the year!).

She excitedly awaits a soap opera project lined up for her. Unfortunately, the management has not decided yet who her leading man would be. There are rumors that she might be paired with JC de Vera, who is also a former Kapatid star.

“Siyempre gusto namin ni JC ng work. Hindi ko lang alam kung kami nga magkakasama. Although nagkasama naman kami sa TV5 dati,” Alex says.

So I asked her, “Given a chance, kung ikaw ang papipiliin sino gusto mo maka-partner?” She quickly replies, “Si Charice! O si Ka Freddie Aguilar?!”(Sige, both! Para love triangle ang peg! Push!).
