Tom Rodriguez picks career over love

tom

Tom Rodriguez says he isn’t dating anyone at the moment (publicity)

Opportunities sometimes come few and far between, a fact that isn’t lost on Tom Rodriguez.

As such, the former “My Husband’s Lover” heartthrob that stole the hearts of televiewers pointed out in a recent interview, “I’m choosing to focus on my career… ’Yun naman ang pinunta ko dito, para magtrabaho.”

Tom admitted that the last two years had been hard, saying, “hati lagi ang attention ko.” He added, “Siguro I owe it to myself this time to give myself a chance.”

This comes in the heels of rumors that he has already split with rumored girlfriend Kaye Rivera — formerly known as K-La Rivera, a finalist on ABS-CBN’s singing search “Star Power.”

These rumors also surfaced around the same time his “So It’s You” leading lady Carla Abellana went through a much-publicized breakup with actor Geoff Eigenmann.

Of Kaye, Tom simply said, “We remain really good friends. We remain in constant contact.”

As for Carla, while he admitted to having grown closer to her on the film set, he clarified, “I’m not with anyone right now.”

He also refuted a recent report about a very “drunk” Carla supposedly calling him up to drive her home.

Tom said, “I don’t think it’s in her character. Hindi ko nakikita sa pagkatao niya ’yun… Wala naman akong nakuhang tawag or anything. Pero kung meron man, kahit nasaan pa man siya, pupuntahan ko siya. Kasi ganun naman ’pag magkaibigan. Pero wala.”

Anything is possible

Carla, for her part, would like to keep her relationship with Tom purely professional.

“Work is work para sa amin,” she declared in a separate interview.

“Honestly, anything is possible,” she nevertheless said. “Pwede nating gulatin ang mga sarili natin. Pwede tayong gulatin ng Diyos. Hindi natin alam. Hindi natin pwede pangunahan but we’ll see. But not anytime soon (for me), I guess kasi pareho rin naman kaming may mga pinagdadaanan. Ayaw namin pilitin just because gusto ng mga tao. Ang love, hindi naman pinipili ’yan eh. ’Di natin alam sino at kailan (dadating).”

As to being romantically linked to her co-star, Carla said, “Wala talaga tayong magagawa kung gustong isipin ng tao ’yun, kung gusto nilang bigyang meaning ’yung closeness namin. Coincidental nga raw.”

She added, “Basta alam namin sa sarili namin na wala kaming ginagawang masama at wala kaming tinatapakang tao. Walang problema basta trabaho lang kami. Alam ni God ang totoo.”

KZ Tandingan: Of dreams and frustrations

Kristine Zhenie Tandingan, popularly known as KZ, wasn’t born a star but she is definitely one now. She has, after all, earned herself a loyal following after being crowned grand champ of “X-Factor Philippines” some two years ago.

Yet, despite the accolades, the Davao del Sur native has kept her feet firmly planted on the ground. In fact, she is now more practical in her outlook.

“Mas simple ang mga goals ko sa buhay. Mas na-appreciate ko ‘yung mga maliliit na bagay,” she says.

More than anything, KZ is happy to be able provide her family some comfort. Her wish is to bring them abroad someday.

On her flaws

With success comes criticism and KZ is more than aware of being once described as someone who sings like a drunk.

KZ admitted, “Hindi ko na napapansin kung ano ‘yung pinaggagagawa ko as long as kinakanta ko ‘yung nararamdaman ko.”

She’s working hard to better herself, relating, “Ngayon inaaral ko pa paano i-control, lalo na (dahil) sobrang weird (kong) gumalaw ‘pag kumakanta. Syempre gusto mo naman na medyo mas okay kang tingnan sa TV. Mas inaaral ko ngayon na maging mas okay ‘yung galaw.”

Taking it one step at a time

Counting soul and jazz as her genre, KZ knows her music might not be an easy sell but she remains undeterred.

“Ako naman, personally, hindi ko habol na maging super mainstream kasi ‘yung kanta ko naman, like the genre ko, hindi siya ‘yung talagang pang-super mainstream. Pero I will be super happy kung maging,” she says.

In any case, KZ hints that she is willing to try her hand at other more popular musical genres, intimating how her management will be pairing her with the likes of Gloc9 and Abra for her next album.

Hopes and dreams

KZ is hoping that more people would learn to appreciate OPM.

She believes that the local music industry would be more vibrant the support of local listeners.

She went on to cite the success being enjoyed by K-Pop, saying, “Hindi naman sisikat worldwide kung ang mga Korean mismo hindi sila supportive sa Korean pop music, ‘di ba?”

She adds, “Minsan kasi tayo, meron tayong magagaling na OPM artists, pero mas pinipili nating pakinggan ‘yung mga international artists, dun namamatay yung OPM eh.”

This, she says, adds to her frustrations as an artist.

“Mahirap kasi ‘yung ginagawa mo ‘yung best mo, gumagawa ka ng bagong kanta, pero hindi mo nakukuha ‘yung suporta na gusto mo sana. Kung gusto natin sana maging known internationally ang OPM, dapat sa atin muna magsimula. Suportahan natin ‘yung OPM.”

‘Let It Go’ named Favorite Song at Disney Music Awards

let it go

A scene from ‘Frozen’

The popular theme song of the hit animated feature “Frozen” has earned another recognition, this time at the first Radio Disney Music Award held Sunday in Los Angeles, California.

“Let it Go,” which was also performed by “American Idol” season 11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez at the “biggest night in music for kids and families,” was honored with the Soundtraxx award or the Favorite Song from a Movie or TV Show award.

Sanchez said she’s proud to have represented the Filipinos at the awards.

Meanwhile, “Let It Go” composer Robert Lopez and wife, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, admitted that they thought Time magazine made a mistake when it included their names in the annual 100 most influential people list.

“The fact that we’re even on this list made us laugh really hard. We wrote the music for a Disney princess movie,” she said.

The couple earned an Oscar for the song, making them among EGOTs – the rare group of people who have earned an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony.

The adventures of Elsa, Anna and Olaf continue to hold the hearts of people all over the world enthralled, but Disney Chairman Alan Horn revealed that they haven’t discussed a sequel yet.

If anything, the animation studio is focused towards bringing the story to Broadway.

CODY, Wyo. (AP) — A museum in Wyoming has acquired an old pistol made famous by a masked hero of television from more than 60 years ago.

The Lone Ranger’s Colt .45 is now on display at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, in Cody.

The single-action revolver belonged to actor John Hart. He portrayed the Lone Ranger in the original TV series that ran from 1952 to 1954, about a masked Texas Ranger who battled injustice in the Old West. His sidekick Tonto was one of the most well-known American Indian stereotypes of all time.

Hart used several firearms over his acting career, but this gun is special. It features ivory grips and intricate engraving.

The Powell Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1k4pTpi) the museum also has acquired autographed photos of Hart in costume and a cookbook he wrote in the 1990s.

Clooney gives up litany of loves for engagement

litany

Actor George Clooney, left, and Stacy Keibler arrive at the Oscars at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Clooney, 52, Hollywood’s most determined bachelor famous for a litany of fleeting loves, including Keibler, has taken himself off the romantic market and proposed to 36-year-old attorney, Amal Alamuddin. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Looks like George Clooney owes Michelle Pfeiffer lots of money.

The 52-year-old actor — Hollywood’s most determined bachelor, famous for a litany of fleeting loves — has taken himself off the romantic market, even though he once bet Pfeiffer $100,000 that he’d never marry again.

After dating a string of actresses, models, a cocktail waitress and a former professional wrestler, Clooney recently proposed to 36-year-old international law attorney Amal Alamuddin — despite repeated protestations that marriage wasn’t for him.

“This fascination with my love life is really something,” he told the British newspaper The Express earlier this year. “I keep saying I’ll never get married again or have children, but people just don’t want to believe me.”

News of the engagement was announced by the human-rights law firm where Alamuddin works. Doughty Street Chambers said Monday its lawyers and staff “offer their best wishes and congratulations to Ms. Amal Alamuddin … and Mr. George Clooney on their engagement to be married.”

Alamuddin has advised former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Syria, helped ex-Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko challenge her imprisonment and represented WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as he fought extradition to Sweden.

Though they may seem like opposites, the pair, who were first photographed together late last year, have more in common than some might think.

Clooney has shown increasing interest in international affairs and human-rights issues, campaigning for a resolution to the conflict in Darfur and organizing a starry telethon to help Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. He’s also hosted fundraisers for President Obama, and recently made headlines for defending the president during an argument with Las Vegas casino mogul Steve Wynn.

So what about Alamuddin made Clooney decide to give up the single life? Specific details are unclear. But she certainly cuts a different swath from his previous public romances. Here’s a partial list of loves Clooney left behind:

— Talia Balsam, married from 1989 to 1993: The 55-year-old actress is now married to actor-director John Slattery of “Mad Men” fame.

— Kimberly Russell, dated in the mid-1990s: The 49-year-old actress has been married to Michael Bonewitz, who works in film production, since 2000.

— Krista Allen, dated in the early 2000s: Best known for roles on “Baywatch” and “Days of Our Lives,” the 43-year-old Allen met Clooney while making 2002′s “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” and dated him on and off for several years.

— Lucy Liu, dated in the early 2000s: The 45-year-old “Elementary” star was linked to Clooney in 2000 and photographed kissing him in 2006.

— Lisa Snowdon, dated in the early 2000s: A British TV personality and fashion model, the 41-year-old Snowdon made headlines for her five-year, on-and-off relationship with Clooney on both sides of the Atlantic.

— Sarah Larson, dated in 2008: Larson, 34, was a Las Vegas cocktail waitress when Clooney romanced her for nearly a year.

— Elisabetta Canalis, dated 2009 to 2011: The 35-year-old Italian TV personality went onto become a “Dancing With the Stars” contestant in the United States after she and Clooney ended their two-year romance.

— Stacy Keibler, dated from 2011 to 2013: A former professional wrestler, Keibler, 34, was Clooney’s companion at countless Hollywood events during their two-year relationship. She is now married to entrepreneur Jared Pobre and expecting her first child.

Google, Jay Z among 2014 Webby winners

Jay-Z (AP)

NEW YORK (AP) — Google, Jay Z and crowdfunding site Kickstarter are among the winners of this year’s Webby Awards, a celebration of Internet achievement that got its start nearly two decades ago.

The awards are presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a group of about 1,000 Web experts and Internet professionals. Judges included Tumblr founder David Karp and “House of Cards” actor Kevin Spacey.

Each Webby category is split in two: There’s an award from the academy and a “people’s voice” award for which anyone can cast an online vote. Winners in the latter category include Beyonce, Tumblr, the NASA website and satirical news site The Onion (which was also the academy’s pick in the humor category).

The website “Reasons My Son Is Crying” received both the Webby and the people’s voice award in the personal blog or website category. The site features photos of bawling children captioned with the reasons they are upset, which range from “I wouldn’t let him eat dog food” to “we told him that his dinosaur is blue.”

Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig won a lifetime achievement award. Lessig co-founded Creative Commons, which provides a way for people to license their online work for public use.

The Jamaican Bobsleigh Team won Athlete of the Year honors for using crowdfunding to finance its trip to the Sochi Olympics. The team raised $129,687.17 from the crowdfunding site Crowdtilt and also received unsolicited donations from the supporters of Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency inspired by a silly Internet meme.

The awards will be handed out on May 19 in New York in a ceremony famous for restricting winners to five-word acceptance speeches. Actor and comedian Patton Oswalt will host.

NEW YORK (AP) — Fox apparently isn’t going to let NBC dominate the world of live TV musicals.

Fox jumped into the theater game Monday by announcing it will broadcast a three-hour live version of the musical “Grease” that will feature “a young ensemble cast” that has yet to be named.

NBC got a ratings boost last December with its live broadcast of “The Sound of Music” starring Carrie Underwood. It says it’s working on a live production of “Peter Pan” for next December.

“Grease” features such songs as “Summer Nights,” ”Greased Lightnin’,” ”We Go Together” and “You’re the One That I Want.” It was made into a 1978 film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

The live version will be a production of Paramount Television.
