It took a while, but “Transit” and “Sana Dati” — the cream of the crop of Cinemalaya 2013 — are finally getting their much-anticipated theatrical releases this month as well as their first taste of the international film festival circuit.
The two films swept most of Cinemalaya’s major awards this year, including Best Film in their respective categories.
Directed by Hannah Espia, “Transit” emerged as the most honored film in the festival’s New Breed Section. The film follows the lives of several Filipinos living in Tel Aviv, Israel where the film was mostly shot.
Producer Paul Soriano confirmed to InterAksyon that the film will be shown exclusively at Ayala Cinemas Trinoma, Greenbelt and Glorietta 4.
Soriano also announced that “Transit” will also have its international premiere at the Busan International Film Festival in Busan, South Korea from October 3 to 12.
Dubbed as not only “the most dynamic film event in Asia” but also “the largest Asian film celebration,” Busan is regarded as “a genuine driving force behind the development of not only Korean cinema in particular, but also Asian cinema in general.”

“’Transit’ will be competing with 12 other Asian films under the New Currents section, which introduces the works of up-and-coming directors who are leading the way for Asian cinema,” Soriano added.
Jerrold Tarog’s anti-romcom yarn “Sana Dati” will also have its commercial theatrical run starting September 28. Like “Transit”, which has scheduled special screenings at UP Diliman and UP Los Baños, “Sana Dati” will also have a campus tour of sorts at UP Manila, UP Diliman, UP Los Baños and De La Salle University this month.
The Best Film winner of Cinemalaya’s Directors Showcase section will also have its international premiere at Busan under its A Window on Asian Cinema section, along with Brillante Mendoza’s “Sapi”, Lav Diaz’s “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” and Adolfo Alix, Jr.’s “Death March”.
Other Philippine entries at Busan are Babyruth Villarama-Gutierrez’s gay documentary, “Jazz In Love” which was the opening film of Cinemalaya 2013, “Johnny Loves Dolores” by US-based Clarissa Delos Reyes, and “Prologue to the Great Desaparecido”, a short film by Lav Diaz which clocks at a measly 31 minutes, extremely short by the maverick filmmaker’s lengthy standards.
“Sana Dati” will also be screened at the Hawaii International Film Festival slated from October 10 to 20. The film will be featured in the Spotlight on the Philippines section along with Alvin Yapan’s “Debosyon”, Leo Abaya’s “Instant Mommy”, Brillante Mendoza’s “Lola” and “Thy Womb” and Jason Paul Laxamana’s “Babagwa”.
