Gil M. Portes: Master Filmmaker

Filipino film director, producer and screen writer Gil M. Portes lands what he considers a dream project, “Ang Tag-Araw Ni Twinkle.”

“Katulad po ng sinabi ng mga star directors… ‘Someday I will be called a master filmmaker.’ Gusto ko maging filmmaker and after several decades, napili ako maging master filmmaker kasama nitong sampung film directors na ito,” he said during the Grand Reception of the Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival: All Masters Edition 2013 held at the SM Mall of Asia Atrium, Pasay City.

The “Liars” director said that the qualifications of being a master director are “best, maraming na-achieve (at) magaganda ang pelikula…”

Adding, “Ang mga master natutulog ng alas diez ng gabi at gumigising ng alas cuatro ng umaga sabi ni Joel (Lamangan) para mag-walis… in other words, matatanda na,” he joked.

Portes, who considers directing the Comedy King Dolphy as one of the highlights of his career, doesn’t mind being called old or a veteran “because you know meron kaming nagawa sa Philippine movies.”

During the event, the trailers of each of the 10 masters’ films were shown one by one, with the directors and stars going on stage after to talk about their films and invite the public to support the festival. All directors showed much gratitude for the support of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and SM Cinema.

Other films that are part of the festival are: Jose Javier Reyes’ “Ano Ang Kulay Ng Mga Nakalimutang Pangarap?;” Chito Roño’s, “Badil;” Maryo J. Delos Reyes’ “Bamboo Flowers;” Tikoy Aguiluz’s “Eman;” Mel Chionglo’s “Lauriana;” Joel Lamangan’s “Lihis;” Elwood Perez’s “Otso;” Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes’ “Sonata;” and Romy Suzara’s “Tinik.”

Apart from the 10 directors’ films, also for screening are recently restored classics like Lino Brocka’s “Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag,” Manuel Conde’s “Genghis Khan” and Celso Ad Castillo’s “Bahay Ng Lagim,” which will be shown as part of the film festival’s Masters’ masters tribute along with the accompanying documentary “The Gospel According To Celso Kid.”

Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival: All Masters Edition is open in over 300 SM cinemas nationwide and will run until Sept. 17.
