Miss World 2013 Philippine representative Megan Young continues to do well in the pageant, based on her inclusion in a couple of its special events.
Megan is set to perform at the Miss World’s Dances of the World segment, as one of the 11 contestants who will showcase a dance from their respective countries in the major international beauty pageant.
She eagerly announced her inclusion via the official Facebook page of Miss World – Philippines on Friday, Sept. 13:
According to Likha.org, Singkil originated “from the Lake Lanao region, (and) is a popular dance performed during celebrations and other (festivities). Performed as a female-only dance, the Singkil serves as either a conscious or unconscious advertisement to would-be suitors for her future marriage. The ladies graciously step in and out of clashing bamboo poles arranged in either a parallel, rectangular, or crisscross fashion, while manipulating either apir (fans), mosala (scarves), or even just their bare hands.”
It is also said to recount “the epic legend of the ‘Darangan’ of the Maranao people of Mindanao.”
Megan was reportedly trained by choreographer Carlos Buendia, Jr. for her Singkil number.
She joins the candidates from Chile, China, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Ireland, Namibia, Nepal, Slovakia US Virgin Islands and Venezuela as participants in the culminating event of the prestigious international pageant.
Earlier, Megan also made it to the final 11 of the pageant’s controversial Beach Fashion competition, which has been met with protests over alleged “exploitation, insult and humiliation of women.” It will be noted that the pageant and all its preliminary activities are being held in Indonesia, a conservative and a Muslim-majority country.
