‘MHL’ gets nod from a priest

Two months after being subjected to scrutiny by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), controversial drama series “My Husband’s Lover” (“MHL”) continues to grab people’s attention – even that of a priest in the US.

Actress Carla Abellana, one of lead stars of the gay-themed primetime teleserye, uploaded a photo of a letter from a certain Fr. Rey V. Culaba, CSsR on her Instagram account on Wednesday, Sept. 4. As caption, she wrote: “A letter addressed to our fantastic director from father rey in san francisco. See, they appreciate #myhusbandslover too.”

Fr. Culaba congratulated “MHL” director Dominic Zapata “for (their) EXCELLENT teleserye… It is truly a class of its own among the teleseryes past and present.”

He continued, “As a film, it is beautifully executed and directed by you (Zapata). The creative ways you and your team have explored each scene, almost to each frame, are very impressive. One could see that a lot of thought have gone into this production.”

Fr. Culaba also commended the shows’ “great cast – from the lead actors, Tom (Rodriguez) and Dennis (Trillo), and actress, Carla, to the supporting cast…” “Congratulations to all of the ensemble, for that’s what they truly are. It’s obvious that all worked together as a team.”

He pointed out that the story’s “time has truly come. It took a lot of courage, guts and risk for you and the GMA management to take on the topic of Homosexuality head-on. It had to be addressed, and address it you did in such a wonderful, sensitive and non-exploitative manner. Bravo.”

To end, Fr. Culaba described “MHL” as “a work of justice.” “Justice to the long-oppressed, misunderstood and even, in many cases, despised persons of our society and culture. Justice to the LGBT’s long denied the respect, recognition and affirmation due them as persons made in the “image and likeness of God” as their heterosexual brothers and sisters also are. Your film has an awesome liberating message not only for LGBT’s but for our society as a whole.”

In an exclusive e-mail to Bulletin Entertainment, Fr. Culaba confirmed that he is “indeed responsible for writing the letter to Mr. Dominic Zapata, the Director.” He also sent “a follow-up letter to Mr. Zapata, which contains further reflections on the show.”
