Young Pinay named Best Actress at Harlem Int’l Film Festival

Child actress Barbara Miguel has won the Best Actress Award at the Harlem International (Hi) Film Festival in Harlem, New York recently for her role as a nine-year-old mother in “Nuwebe.”

The movie was the only Philippine entry in competition at the festival. Miguel was unable to personally receive the award.

Miguel is currently promoting the Sineng Pambansa National Film Festival All-Masters Edition entry directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes, “Bamboo Flowers,” where she is cast. The 2013 FAMAS Best Child Actress is also part of Joel Lamangan’s “Burgos,” set for release next month.

As posted on its official website (harleminternationalfilmfestival.org) the Harlem International (stylized as Hi) Film Festival “inspires and entertains by honoring films that offer honest, thought-provoking portrayals of our world.” Hollywood actress Susan Sarandon and American playwright Eve Ensler are among the board of advisors of the Hi FF. The festival, also dubbed as “The Original Filmmaker’s Festival,” ran from Sept. 11-15, 2013.

“Nuwebe,” the 2013 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival’s New Breed category entry, had its US premiere last Sept. 7. The drama incest written and directed by Joseph Israel Laban was based on a true story. The film also stars Jake Cuenca, Nadine Samonte and Anita Linda.

Last month, “Nuwebe,” with English title “The Youngest,” was one of the 105 films screened in Canada as part of the Focus on World Cinema section of the 37th Montreal World Film Festival.

“Nuwebe” is also an Official Selection to the 2013 Vancouver International Film Festival (Dragons and Tigers) happening on Sept. 26 to Oct. 11, and to the Göteborg International Film Festival in Sweden in 2014.
