Huge stars, ‘notable’ hunks set to thrill teachers at 2G event

It is said that teaching is the profession that enables all professions including acting.

This may be the reason several talents from the three TV networks (TV5, ABS-CBN, GMA-7) including Regine Velasquez, Derek Ramsay, Edu Manzano, Jodi Sta. Maria, Ryzza Mae Dizon and Judy Ann Santos readily agreed to participate in the PLDT-Smart Foundation’s Gabay Guro (2G) grand gathering on Oct. 26 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“‘Yung mga stars po dito, talagang nagkusang loob sila (na sumali sa event). This is something they are doing for free, for the love of our teachers,” said PLDT-Smart Foundation Chairman of the Board of Trustees Manny V. Pangilinan and 2G Chairman Chaye Cabal-Revilla.

Interestingly, one of the most awaited numbers requested by many of the 20,000 teachers expected to be at the event is that of, as PLDT Home Broadband Head Gary Dujali put it, “notable” hunks.

“Ang nag-confirm si Daniel Matsunaga, yung taga (TV series) ‘Misibis Bay’ na Victor Silayan, Vin Abrenica… for sure meron tayong mga limang notable hunks na pupunta,” he said.

About 90% of the attendees are women from age 25 to 35 and so the stars and entertainment at the event cater to the demographic. Gary noted that teachers went wild over Robin Padilla, Cesar Montano and Gary Valenciano last year so this time “we’ll try to come up with a different kind of entertainment.”

Regine will render a song inspired by teachers from all over the country. “She (regine) is going to be on video lang kasi she’s out of the country. Kung nandito (lang sana siya) siya, magjo-join talaga siya,” Chaye said.

Other stars that will either perform at or grace the event are Rocco Nacino, Anne Curtis, Marian Rivera, Pops Fernandez and Martin Nievera. Perhaps they would even share anecdotes about teachers who’ve touched their lives.

According to a release, Gabay Guro is an educational arm and a flagship project of the PLDT-Smart Foundation. Run by volunteers composed of executives from the PLDT Manager’s Club Inc. (PLDT MCI), it is supported by the PLDT-Smart Foundation of the Manny V. Pangilinan Group.

The core program of the foundation is anchored on scholarships, trainings, housing and educational facilities, livelihood programs, broadbanding and computerization, and tributes to teachers. It has 700 scholars to date and 36 state universities partners nationwide.

A house and lot from Stateland Inc. and a Foton LEV van will be raffled for the two luckiest teachers at this year’s grand gathering.
