It’s interesting how “Metro Manila” became reality and more, that it has an all-Pinoy cast under the helm of a British director.
Filmmaker Sean Ellis recalled an incident he witnessed that inspired him to make “Metro Manila.” It was a fight between two employees of an armored truck company, in full combat mode – that is to say M16 guns, bulletproof jackets and Kevlar helmets. They were screaming at each other in front of their armored truck. It ended with one of them kicking the truck before they both got in and drove off.
This memory haunted him even upon returning to the UK. “I kept on wondering what they were arguing about. And if an idea keeps coming back…it’s a story that’s important enough to pursue,” he said.
Within 18 months, Ellis wrote a 20-page synopsis with a clear beginning, middle and end, all based around that incident. He then met up with old friend Frank E. Flowers in Los Angeles where they worked on the script for two weeks. Sean traveled to the Philippines to see if it was possible to put the project together.
“Metro Manila” stars Jake Macapagal, John Arcilla and Althea Vega in the lead roles. It will be shown in Metro Manila starting on Oct. 9. The film delves on a couple who went to Manila to seek greener pasture only to end up more miserable than when they were in the Mountain Province.
