Oscar winner Natalie Portman has found herself back in the life of Thor playing Jane Foster, a character she calls “the foil for the superhero.”

In the movie “Thor: The Dark World,” the sequel to 2011’s “Thor,” we catch up with her in London, hard at work. Of course, “She’s missing Thor still but forging on with her research and trying to date again and get her life back together,” Portman says.

Funny enough, when Thor comes for a, well, business visit of sorts, “She is angry with him for not dropping by when he was on Earth.” Like gods have nothing better to do. Like saving her life, actually.

The events of this sequel supposedly happened a year after the events of “The Avengers.” Thor has had his battles elsewhere and a primeval race led by Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) is out for revenge. As Odin, Thor’s father and king of Asgard, cannot confront this enemy, Thor reunites with Jane supposedly to free the imprisoned Loki (Tom Hiddleston). So really, if Jane had a Facebook account, she has to find a bigger word than complicated to describe her relationship with the crown prince of Asgard.

Wild love life aside, Portman notes working with the hunky Chris Hemsworth (Thor): “It’s always so fun to work with Chris. He’s really got the best energy. He is so enthusiastic about the work and so sweet to work with and so good.”

Aside from Hemsworth, Portman relishes the fact that she got to work with Anthony Hopkins (Odin) and Rene Russo (Frigga, Odin’s queen and stepmother to Thor), actors she says she greatly admires.

“They were so incredibly lovely – like beyond your wildest dreams lovely. So warm and normal and so impressive, doing really wonderful things with their scenes that I never imagined while reading them,” she gushes.

She is also constantly amazed with the kind of sets they work in. “You walk in and you’re like, ‘oh wow, we’re making a movie!’ You feel like it’s really like the old days of cinema because the scope is just so, so grand. Huge columns and all; it’s just incredible. It’s fun to be on that kind of set and see the craftsmanship that goes into it.

One of the things that stood out for her was The Hall of Science set on Asgard, which she describes as “really, really beautiful.”

Aside from that, the love interest of a god also has to have some nice threads to go with the part. “It was definitely new to be in the Asgard clothes and luckily I think my character should feel uncomfortable in them, so, any discomfort I had could be part of the character’s feelings as well.”

For Portman, however, there were certain clothing combinations that made her and the crew laugh, so audiences may want to keep an eye out for that. The best experience for her, though, was getting “sucked into a wornhole” after being on a rig on the set in London.

Some people might find that troubling, but apparently not Portman. Yeah, she’s kind of cool like that.

“Thor: The Dark World” opens today, Oct. 30, in local cinemas, a full nine days prior to its release in the US.
