Phoemela vows to make it up to ‘secret’ daughter

Phoemela Baranda feels like she’s been set free now that she has publicly divulged a long-standing secret – a daughter she hid for the past 15 years.

Speaking to “Bandila,” Monday night, she told host Boy Abunda: “’Yun ang pinaghuhugutan ko ng lakas, my daughter.”

The Kapamilya model-host vows to be best “mommy” to 15-year-old Kim Nichole Baranda. Phoemela, 33, promised “to make up for all those lost times na hindi ko naibigay sa’yo noong bata ka… makabawi ako sa mga nakalipas na taon.”

What is important for Phoemela now is that the burden of secrecy has been lifted. “Ngayon, whew! Ang sarap ng feeling!”

She explained, “Kasi gusto ko siya ikwento sa lahat. Gusto ko siya ipakita sa lahat, ’yung pictures… kaso minsan, nagkakaroon ako ng insecurity dahil hindi ko pa nasasabi…”

Considering this as starting over with Kim, Phoemela is also praying that her daughter will “have a good life also and all the blessings for her.”

According to Phoemela, Kim knew her to be an aunt. In order the start fixing things with her daughter, she said, “Inayos ko muna ’yung relasyon naming dalawa. Mahirap, up to now inaayos ko pa din. Kasi ’yung mga oras na nawala, nagtatrabaho ako… minsan isang araw ko lang siya nakakasama.”

Upon her revelation to Kim, “Siyempre bata siya, marami siyang tanong,” she admitted.

“Kapag kasama ko siya, ina-acknowledge ko na anak ko siya pero siyempre sa mga relatives ko, sa mga malalapit na kaibigan, parang nagtataka sila, ‘Sino siya?’ Kasi pakilala ng mommy ko is pamangkin ko siya, the daughter of my brother.”

It was her late mother’s idea to hide her pregnancy. “Naging (ina) ako at a very young age. Nag-uumpisa pa lang ako. My mom really decided na, ‘Itago muna natin para sa karera mo,’” she related.

Phoemela gave birth to Kim in the US. She, however, has never revealed the identity of Kim’s father.

“I’m just very thankful to my mom – she passed away already – talagang inintindi niya ’yung karera ko na ‘kaya natin ’yan.’” Phoemela’s mother died in 2009, when Kim was 11.

Phoemela first aired her revelation on Sunday’s “Buzz Ng Bayan,” appearing on live TV with Kim.

Prior to the guesting, she announced on Twitter (@phoemelabaranda): “Please watch Buzz Ng Bayan later at 4pm, ch2 (8 on sky) as I share a big part of my life.”

She also posted photos of their appearance on the show on her Instagram account (phoemelabaranda).

For her part, Kim said she understood why her mother needed to hide her from the public. “In-explain naman sa akin that they did for security, for her career. I know naman how showbiz is,” she said in the “Buzz” interview.

To her mother, Kim said, “I appreciate all the things you’re doing for me, all the catching up you’re doing. I know sometimes I’m a rebel, but I love you.” She also added that she doesn’t see the need to know who her biological father is. “My mom is both my father and mother now.”

On Twitter, some celebrities laud Phoemela’s courageous act. Comedian Vice Ganda expressed, “Phoemela Barranda’s story. Condemn the act. Not the person. #BuzzNgBayan.”

Former “Buzz” host and colleague Ruffa Gutierrez said: “Watching @phoemelabaranda ‘a revelation on #BuzzNgBayan that she has a 15 yr old daughter. I laud u! It’s never 2 late 2 make things right!”
