A slew of stars joined in paying tribute to teachers via PLDT Smart-Foundation’s Gabay Guro grand gathering held Oct. 26 at SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Derek Ramsay, a regular at the event, actually keeps his work schedule tentative come October in anticipation of being invited to the gathering. Out of goodwill, the brands he endorses allow him to participate even if their competition is on the list of sponsors.

“Four years ago – dito rin sa MOA pero sa labas lang ng quad – ay nandun na ako. Every year, nandito ako so it’s not about endorsements – not about me, but about the teachers. They don’t get appreciated as much as they deserve so I think naman I’m excused if I want to pay my respects to these hard working people,” he told Bulletin Entertainment and select members of media in an interview.

Other celeb participants this year were Anne Curtis, Judy Ann Santos, Marian Rivera, Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandez, Jolo Revilla, Ogie Alcasid, Richard Gomez, Rocco Nacino, Daniel Matsunaga, Vin Abrenica, Victor Silayan and John James Uy.

Pops pointed out that the teachers not only prepare us for work but they mold the person we become.

She talked about teachers who’ve been very “patient” with her and whose dedication and discipline to their craft inspired her to have the same for her own.

“Na-appreciate ko yung pag aaral ko kasi ang gagaling ng mga teachers natin,” she noted.

If Edu would have his way, he wants higher pay for the teachers.

“They give up so much of their lives for people… ilagay natin sila sa loftier status para di din napipirata abroad.”

Some of the highlights at this year’s grand gathering were Marian’s song and dance number with the teachers, Ryzza Mae’s recitation of a poem to the unsung heroes, and the song written for educators titled “Believing In Me” sung by Regine Velasquez.

The event was made more exciting with the raffle of a house and lot from Stateland Inc that went to Annalyn Dizon of Bacoor National High School; and that of a Foton Van won by Zeny Toco of Parang High School.

The Gabay Guro team, led by no less than PLDT Chairman Manny Pangilinan and 2G chairman Chaye Cabal-Revilla, were present at the event attended by at least 30,000 teachers from all over the country.
